Overview
This is an excellent opportunity for an EBME technician to be involved in a department that is expanding its role within a busy acute NHS Trust. Responsibilities
* Provide specialised clinical technical services in order to repair, maintain and perform electrical safety testing of complex and patient-critical equipment used for the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
* Communicate with clinical users to understand the nature of faults or problems with medical equipment, assess urgency, and respond appropriately to requests.
* Contribute to planned preventive maintenance systems and produce comprehensive reports for each repair/maintenance job.
* Provide first line training for clinical staff within the Trust.
* Work mainly at University Hospital Lewisham but may be required to work at other sites used by the Trust.
* Undertake advanced fault-finding and repair/maintenance of equipment within the EBME remit, ensuring functionality to manufacturers’ specifications.
* Contribute to the efficient running of the planned Preventative Maintenance scheme, including safety checks, and calibration/quality control.
* Carry out acceptance and electrical safety testing in accordance with local procedures.
* Maintain accurate records in the computerised reporting system and keep the EBME Head of Department informed of equipment status.
* Act as an identified technician for clinical areas and as a first point of contact for clinical issues related to medical equipment.
* Prioritise and manage own workload within departmental procedures and service demands.
* Ensure all works meet quality, regulatory, and manufacturer requirements.
* Attend regular meetings with the Head of EBME and contribute to improvements in departmental methods and policies.
* Maintain a clean and safe workshop environment and assist in maintaining adequate stock of spare parts for timely service.
* Assist in procurement and acceptance testing of new equipment in line with Codes of Practice.
* Provide training and liaise with operational and clinical staff on equipment usage; train other technicians in EBME techniques and methods.
* Participate in clinical trials and equipment evaluations.
* Perform duties in line with Health and Safety at Work Act and local rules; participate in an on-call rota (currently one week in four) for emergency out-of-hours service.
* Deal directly with patients who use hospital equipment at home.
* Carry out any other duties deemed necessary by the Head of EBME to maintain service levels.
Qualifications and Skills
* HNC in electronics, or equivalent, plus certified training on a wide range of medical equipment; at least 2 years of practical experience as a Hospital EBME engineer.
* Good team worker with strong communications skills; able to work flexibly and take responsibility for workload and quality.
* Experience using a computer database for job management and strong computer literacy.
* Current driving licence is essential.
* Ability to understand and use numerical and technical data; good knowledge of electrical, mechanical and building systems in a health service environment.
