The Environment Agency is looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with a strong investigative background, good communication skills and a sound working knowledge of all aspects of running a major investigation. Experience of working with Partnership Organisations and of leading, driving and developing investigative teams and complex investigations is desirable.


Role and responsibilities

You will work alongside our Senior Investigation Managers and our Major Incident Room to lead investigations into the most serious and complex environmental crimes. You will use your knowledge and experience to drive these cases forward by coordinating and overseeing all aspects of the investigations, including:

* Identifying lines of enquiry
* Reviewing intelligence
* Raising and allocating actions
* Coordinating evidence gathering and interviews
* Preparing casefiles and contributing to successful prosecutions

Investigations can be complex and varied, often involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud. This role provides an opportunity to apply relevant investigative experience to serious environmental crime.

The role sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The National Investigations Team is a nationally dispersed group of investigators focused on bringing the most serious environmental offenders to justice. You will help lead, coordinate and progress investigations and contribute to developing the team. Please refer to the Additional Information Pack for further details.


Experience and qualifications

* High level of attention to detail, hard-working and self-motivated with a strong investigative background
* In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams)
* Knowledge of environmental crime, leading serious criminal investigations and workings of a Major Incident Room is desirable
* Experience in driving and developing investigation teams; ability to use initiative to find solutions
* Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 vetting is required within a 6-month probationary period
* Full UK driving licence is required


Working pattern and location

This is a hybrid role with flexible working from home and your nearest Environment Agency Office. Travel for meetings and operational duties is required. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role, and you may be required to assume an incident role or support business continuity during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and workplace adjustments will be provided to support you.
