DEPARTMENT: BBC Children's - Factual Entertainment
LOCATION: Location: Media City, Salford - This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office with home working.
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £60,000 - £80,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE BBC Content encompasses all of the BBC's network TV and Radio output and brings world-class creativity to our screens through some of the BBC's biggest brands. The division brings together channels and commissioning with TV and Digital production to provide the best television and online content, wherever and whenever audiences want it. We ensure the widest possible audience can access distinctive, world-beating content across our services.
This is an exciting time to join the Children's and Education 7 to 12 Commissioning Team - with a focus on Newsround and Factual. We commission more Children's content than anyone else in the UK, and have a reputation worldwide for the quality and range of our award-winning unscripted content for kids.
In this role, you will be working with the Newsround team to deliver a first class news service for the BBC's youngest audience, as well as seeking out the very best factual stories that have real meaning for contemporary kids from a range of UK Indies, tiny start-ups to the most experienced.
You will be working across the Factual slate, which includes big titles and brands like Blue Peter, My Life, Stage Stars and Football Academy.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
Led by the Senior Head of Commissioning 7+, alongside fellow Commissioning Editors and Execs, you will be responsible for making sure that the quality and accuracy of Newsround is assured, as well as supporting both a diverse slate of developments and the delivery of commissions in line with Departmental strategy and knowledge of trends.
The role will involve a thorough understanding of managing existing brands as well as encouraging innovation, balancing your editorial nous with ensuring programmes are compliant, delivered on time and on budget and that productions demonstrate value for money, quality, originality and good working practise.
You will be influential in ensuring that Factual Entertainment content delivers to Departmental diversity commitments both on screen and off screen, and across the UK.
You will be nimble and proactive in keeping up with emerging technology and rapidly changing audience behaviours, as they shift away from linear towards different kinds of content across multiple platforms.
You'll also inspire and engage BBC Studios and independent producers by articulating the 7 to 12 Factual editorial priorities, and work with them to create and develop ideas that will entice this young audience to notice, come to and stay with BBC platforms and channels.
You will need to be able to collaborate effectively with the commissioning team and other BBC departments, as well as hold and be able to build strong relationships with external partners and talent.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE The Essential criteria for the role is as follows:
Experience in News or Journalism is a requirement
Must have a keen interest and proven record in commissioning content.
Good production knowledge with a proven record of successful programme making.
Sound editorial judgment and knowledge of editorial policy and fair trading issues.
Creative skills and proven editorial success in producing original ideas, treatments, formats, and developing innovative programme making, fostering creativity in others
Can demonstrate a track record of producing successful content based on a thorough understanding of genre and audience needs.
With outstanding editorial judgement and compliance experience, your passion for the genre will be clearly visible along with the ability to enable creativity and innovation with those you work with.
You'll be curious and analytical, able to identify key trends but also anticipate challenges and overcome them.
You will have a developing range of talent contacts and relationships in the field of Factual production.
Proven ability to work with presenters and contributors, both new and established, in the Factual professional environment.
You will be able to help identify and develop diverse off screen talent from around the UK - collaborating with fellow commissioners to help build career ladders for key production talent
Ideally, you will have a knowledge of the children's content landscape, both linear and digital, including social, gaming and YouTube, and BBC Children's output.
Proven skills to effectively collaborate with both the wider Children's Commissioning team and other BBC departments
Demonstrable understanding of current trends and issues within the broadcasting industry..
Outstanding communication skills and ability to foster good relationships with a wide range of internal and external contacts.
Self-assured, with good team working and leadership skills.
Excellent planning and organisational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and financial commitments.
Demonstrable ability to think strategically about content commissioning.
Audience focused in approach, aware of trends, topical issues and gaps in our output.
