CEI Inspector - Sutton, WV
Position Summary
The inspector will monitor the work of contractors to ensure compliance with contract requirements, specifications, and quality standards for transportation projects of moderate to considerable complexity. In addition to inspection responsibilities, the inspector may be required to provide inspection/project management under the direction of a Project Manager.
Responsibilities
 * Provide daily observation of construction activities and document activities on required reports/forms.
 * Review construction materials for contract and specification compliance.
 * Inspect roadways and structures for conformance to plans and specifications.
 * Evaluate structural materials, placement of culverts, and structural operations such as foundation excavation.
 * Monitor placement of pilings, reinforcing and structural steel, concrete, and backfill.
 * Verify lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey and field engineering equipment.
 * Perform accurate calculations and computations.
 * Sample and test construction materials to ensure they meet the quality requirements of the project specifications.
 * Review contractor submittals for conformance to project documents and specifications.
 * Document and immediately report any non‑compliance actions and safety violations to your immediate supervisor.
 * Record daily work reports to include quantities in Site Manager and for AASHTO projects.
Qualifications
 * Above average math and problem‑solving skills are required.
 * Ability to adapt to new technologies and quickly learn new computer skills.
 * Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
 * Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
 * Fleet drivers must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
 * Must complete a pre‑employment screening; ICE is a drug‑free workplace.
Education and Experience Requirements
 * HS diploma required or equivalent required.
 * Associate or BS in Civil Engineering is a plus.
 * Roadway and bridge inspection experience is required.
 * WVDOT experience is desired.
 * Asphalt Roadway Technician, Earthwork and Base, Concrete Level 1 & 2, and ACI Field Concrete Technician certifications are required.
 * Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
Certifications and Training Requirements
Entry‑Level – Junior Inspector Experience and Certification Requirements
 * A minimum of one year of inspection experience is required.
 * Two of the following certifications are required:
 o Asphalt Roadway Technician
 o Earthwork Drainage & Base Technician
 o Concrete Level 1 and Level 2
 o ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade 1
Mid‑Level Inspector Experience and Certification Requirements
 * A minimum of five years of inspection experience is required.
 * Three of the following certifications are required:
 o Asphalt Roadway Technician
 o Earthwork Drainage & Base Technician
 o Concrete Level 1 and Level 2
 o ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade 1
Senior‑Level Inspector Experience and Certification Requirements
 * A minimum of ten years of inspection experience is required.
 * The following certifications are required:
 o Asphalt Roadway Technician
 o Earthwork Drainage & Base Technician
 o Concrete Level 1 and Level 2
 o ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade 1
 o Foundations Technician
 o Nuclear Gauge Safety Training
 o Hazmat
Physical Demands The role involves moderate physical activity such as walking, standing, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders. Employees may occasionally lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds. It is essential for employees to navigate construction sites skillfully and conduct thorough inspections of materials and structures. Employees must have the ability to visually discern and differentiate details and colors of objects, and proficiency in recognizing sound, tone, and pitch. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. The role demands adaptability to interruptions and changes in workflow, as well as the capacity to sit for extended periods. Employees must be capable of working in varied environmental conditions, including hot, cold, and noisy settings, and be able to stand and walk during site visits. Additionally, working on construction projects may involve night work and weekend work depending on the project scope and may include working in conditions with active traffic.
Expected Hours of Work The ICE offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing an unpaid hour for lunch daily. Work schedules may vary according to the project schedule.
