The role
As a Mechanical Fitter, you'll play a vital role in maintaining and repairing critical systems that help keep the Royal Navy fully operational. This is hands‑on, meaningful engineering work at the heart of national defence—work that protects people, communities, and the security of the UK.
You'll work with complex mechanical and marine equipment, develop specialist knowledge, and build a career where every task genuinely matters. Whether you're diagnosing a defect, completing preventative maintenance or supporting system upgrades, you'll be part of an expert team that takes pride in precision and reliability.
Day-to-day, you'll have the following responsibilities:
* Identifying and rectifying system defects and carrying out alterations to maintain performance and availability
* Completing planned preventative maintenance and nuclear‑implicated work to support operational demands
* Repairing and inspecting combat systems equipment, with occasional work across other engineering sections
* Working in compliance with all Health & Safety legislation and Safe Systems of Work
* Suggesting process and system improvements to enhance productivity and engineering quality.
This is a full‑time role, 36 hours per week, based on site at HMNB Clyde Faslane.
Essential experience of the Mechanical Fitter:
* Previous experience in a marine or industrial engineering environment, or mechanical maintenance
* Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces and in varied weather conditions
* Able to read and interpret technical drawings and apply problem‑solving skills
* Strong attention to detail with a commitment to high engineering standards
* Knowledge of maintenance procedures, risk assessments and COSHH.
Qualifications for the Mechanical Fitter:
Essential:
* Recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship (SVQ Level 3, NVQ or City & Guilds equivalent)
OR
* HNC or above in a Mechanical Engineering discipline with relevant experience
Preferred:
* Additional mechanical, marine, or defence‑related certifications or training.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) clearance for this role.
