Overview of the Post
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated leader to support and manage the delivery of high quality inpatient mental health care on a 20‑bed acute male ward (Betts Ward). The role requires a positive role model who practices evidence‑based care and works closely with a supportive senior nursing team that encourages personal development through supervision, PDR, CPD training programmes and further education.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
* Provide management and leadership of all staff and resources within the unit, incorporating implementation of change and delivery of standards of care.
* Act as a clinical supervisor, mentor and leader for staff from Band 2 to 6 and student nurses; support the Units Duty Senior Nurse (DSN).
* Maintain clinical practice (expected 25 % clinical, 75 % management, with flexibility as unit needs change).
* Authorised signatory for budget management; ensure efficient use of resources and financial restraint.
* Promote good communication within the team and with external agencies, and coordinate multidisciplinary collaboration.
* Lead and chair ward meetings, oversee staffing levels, sickness absence and annual leave, and manage ward schedules.
* Participate in recruitment, selection and induction of staff, ensuring staff development through yearly reviews and training.
* Ensure infection control, ward cleanliness and safe practices, handling complaints and implementing changes to policy and procedure.
* Lead clinical audits, surveys and governance activities, contribute to Trust policy changes, and report findings to senior leadership.
* Maintain a supportive learning environment for student nurses, organise training programmes and mentoring.
* Adopt and enforce the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust clinical policies, and provide role in Hospital Major Incident Plan.
* Communicate effectively with all levels of Trust staff, consultants, external agencies, and the wider community; maintain safeguarding duties for vulnerable adults, children and young people.
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered nurse with relevant NHS experience in an acute mental health setting.
* Band 7 level or equivalent managerial experience.
* Strong evidence‑based practice, clinical leadership and audit experience.
* Proven ability to manage budgets, staffing and multidisciplinary teams.
* Excellent communication, negotiation and problem‑solving skills.
