Professional Duties of a Teacher
* Exercise of general professional duties: A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including operating under the reasonable direction of the principal and the employing authority where applicable.
* Exercise of particular duties: A teacher shall perform, in accordance with directions from the principal, such particular duties as may be reasonably assigned from time to time.
* Planning: Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching pupils according to their educational needs; setting and marking work; and assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
* General responsibilities: Promoting the general progress and well‑being of pupils; providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters; maintaining records and reports on pupils as appropriate; communicating with parents and with external bodies as approved; participating in meetings.
* Assessment/Reporting: Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments and references for pupils as required.
* Staff Development/Professional Development: Participating in staff development and performance review; reviewing teaching methods and programmes; engaging in training and development; advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum development and assessment.
* Discipline/Health and Safety: Maintaining good order and discipline; safeguarding pupils’ health and safety on and off school premises; participating in curriculum and pastoral meetings.
* Public Examinations: Participating in arrangements for pupil preparation for public examinations and assessing pupils for such examinations; recording and reporting assessments; supervising during examinations.
* Administration/Management: Contributing to the selection and development of other teachers; coordinating or managing the work of teachers; participating in school management, curriculum and pastoral activities; attending assemblies and managing attendance where required.
* Workload/Hours: Availability for work within the agreed school terms and hours; adherence to break times and staff policies; ensuring a reasonable balance of duties as determined by contract and school policy.
* Relational/Equality: Promote good relations, equality of opportunity and compliance with equality legislation at all times.
Person Specification / Essential Criteria
* Qualifications/Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification that meets the requirements to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland at the date of taking up appointment; be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
* Experience: Demonstrable experience of teaching Mathematics at Key Stage 3 to achieve positive learning outcomes (including teaching practice).
* Knowledge: Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection policies; SEND Code of Practice; a range of teaching strategies; information technology systems and digital tools; current assessment methods.
* Skills/Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management; ability to create an inclusive learning environment; ability to work collaboratively with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community; ability to work as a team and motivate self and others.
* Values: Commitment to integrated, all‑inclusive, all‑ability education; alignment with the school ethos.
Desirable Criteria
* Experience of teaching Mathematics at Key Stage 4 and/or Key Stage 5; participation in professional development; willingness to contribute to pastoral care and extra‑curricular life of the college.
