The role
Are you passionate about protecting the environment and ready to take on a challenging and rewarding role? We're offering an exciting opportunity to join our Mid Wales Waste and Enforcement Team on a permanent basis as a Tackling Waste Crime Officer.

We're looking for a confident and motivated individual with strong communication and influencing skills who can make a real impact.

This isn't just another office job. You will be based in the Mid Wales but will work towards the Welsh Government's Action Plan to tackle waste crime as part of a virtual, centrally organised team. You will contribute to innovative ways of identifying and tackling illegal waste crime across the area and Wales.

You will either lead or support investigations recommending the most appropriate interventions to take, gathering evidence for enforcement action, analysing data, solving complex problems.

You will be working with Mid Wales Waste Regulation and Enforcement Officers in relation to waste crime as well as partner organisations, such as police and DVSA.

You may be required to work out of area due to resource needs as prioritised by the Tackling Waste Crime Lead Specialist Advisor.

You'll also respond swiftly and effectively to environmental incidents, including illegal waste activities, as part of NRW's duty as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act. Covering a large geographical area you will need to hold a valid full UK licence to drive NRW fleet vehicles (cars and vans).

Interviews will be conducted in-person at a venue to be confirmed in Mid Wales.

As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the NRW office at the above location and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date.

About Us
As part of the Mid Wales Waste and Enforcement team at Natural Resources Wales you will be in a multi-functional team comprising of officers specialising in waste regulation, hazardous waste, environmental enforcement and tackling waste crime. The team is part of our Mid Wales Operations directorate and covers all of Ceredigion and Powys.

What You Will Do

* Take appropriate actions in place and working on agreed all Wales Priorities to deliver the Welsh Government Action Plan to tackle waste crime.
* Contribute to the delivery of the team's business plan, the Regulatory Service Plan and NRW's corporate plan.
* Developing and implementing innovative interventions and new and novel tools and methods to identify and tackle waste crime.
* Take appropriate actions to collect evidence for enforcement purposes, in accordance with defined procedures.
* Where non-compliance is identified, recommend the most appropriate intervention option to ensure operators return to compliance as quickly as possible, with minimum environmental impact and consideration of the economic impacts.
* Assist in the development of medium-term regulatory strategies to tackle waste crime.
* Take the initiative in solving complex and intractable problems.
* Maintain records and information in line with NRW requirements and agreed standards. Respond to incidents and complaints.
* Contribute to a positive health, safety and well-being culture.
* Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post

Your Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge And Skills
In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method .

* Knowledge and experience of either working in a regulated industry or as a regulator.
* Good understanding of waste crime processes and pressures.
* Ability to communicate effectively with regulated business and the public, explaining issues and gaining support by influencing.

Welsh Language Level Requirements

* Essential: A1 - Entry level
* Desirable: C1 - Proficiency level
