We are excited to announce this new clinical psychologist post working within the CAMHs learning disability services. The role is based within one of London borough of Merton’s most established schools for children with diverse and wide-ranging needs with learning disabilities and mental illness/ challenging behaviour, ages 5-19.


The post holder will work within a specific timetable involving consultation, parenting support, multi-agency liaison and individual therapeutic interventions.


The work will include assessing and understanding complex and challenging behaviour/mental health, understanding and implementing positive behavioural approaches and therapeutic strategies, providing recommendations and reviewing these with the child/young person, family and network.


This post sits within the CAMHS LD team ensuring clinical supervision and management from an experienced team.


Children and young people referred to the Learning Disability service have moderate to profound learning disabilities compounded by trauma, mental health difficulties and/or complex and challenging behaviour.


The post combines direct clinical work with children and families with consultation to CAMHS, teaching staff, social workers and others. The work will include assessing and understanding complex and challenging behaviour, mental health, trauma work, developing positive behavioural approaches, direct work with children and young people. There may be opportunities for cognitive and ASD/ADHD assessment and group work.



We are looking for someone with experience who:


1. Has experience of working with children and young people with learning disabilities and/or mental health difficulties.
2. Has skills in the use of functional assessment, intervention and management.
3. Has the ability to communicate in a variety of ways and within a range of networks and good multi-tasking skills.
4. Likes a challenge and works well in a team.

The post holder will:


1. Join a multi-disciplinary team at the CAMHS LD service.
2. Be based within a school carrying out high quality assessments.
3. Provide evidence-based treatment.
4. Have an agreed job plan with specified activity and throughput levels.
5. Co-ordinate care for those children, young people and families on their caseload.
6. Manage risk within team, Directorate and Trust structures.
7. Work to relevant professional and ethical guidelines, and within the framework of Directorate and Trust policies and procedures.
8. Use screening and outcome measures in clinically meaningful ways to demonstrate treatment effectiveness and seek feedback about user experience.
