Requirements
The Principal Teacher reports directly to the Head Teacher. According to 'A teaching profession for the 21st century, Annexe B', the Principal Teacher may be responsible for:
* Leading, managing, and providing strategic direction for colleagues
* Curriculum development and quality assurance
* Contributing to school policy development, particularly regarding pupil behaviour management
* Managing and guiding colleagues
* Reviewing Continuing Professional Learning (CPL) needs, career development, and performance of staff
* Providing advice, support, and guidance to colleagues
* Leading and managing pastoral care within the school
* Developing school policies related to behaviour management, guidance, assessment, and pupil welfare
* Supporting the management, deployment, and development of pastoral care staff
* Implementing whole-school policies on guidance, pastoral care, assessment, and pupil welfare
* Collaborating with colleagues, parents, external agencies, and staff in other schools as appropriate
Key Responsibilities of the Principal Teacher
* Line Management: Overseeing assigned classes and related activities, including quality assurance, Support for Learning, RCCT staff, and PSW timetabling
* Strategic Coordination: Managing the weekly diary in collaboration with the Head Teacher
* Additional Support Needs (ASN): Leading referrals, coordinating with external agencies, chairing Child Planning Meetings, and supporting related initiatives
* Curriculum Leadership: Driving development and implementation of Numeracy, Mathematics, and Interdisciplinary Learning
* Impact Monitoring: Tracking and assessing the effectiveness of Support for Learning interventions to ensure positive learner outcomes
Qualifications
A relevant teaching qualification and registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland are essential.
This role involves Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful candidates must join the PVG Scheme or undergo a Scheme Update check before employment, with costs covered by the candidate. The fee for Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59; existing members pay £18.
