Job Overview
An exciting opportunity to join our Major Trauma Ward (25A). North Bristol NHS Trust is one of two designated Major Trauma Centres in South West England, serving the Severn region. The Major Trauma Centre, supported by six acute trusts as designated trauma units, helps increase chances of survival and recovery for seriously ill patients. We provide specialist equipment and a full range of trauma specialists, including orthopaedics, neurosurgery & radiology teams.
Main Duties
* Be responsible for assessment, planning, provision, maintenance and evaluation of patient care.
* Work within and lead a clinical care team.
* Take charge of the ward/department on a regular basis in the absence of the ward manager or senior nurse.
* Supervise and guide other staff, including healthcare support workers and students.
* Actively contribute to a learning environment by mentoring students and support worker roles.
* Participate in the delivery of high standards of evidence based nursing care.
* Ensure safe ordering, administration and custody of patients’ medication according to Trust policies.
* Co‑ordinate discharge planning in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
* Lead and support junior staff in emergency situations and familiarise them with emergency procedures.
* Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.
Person Specification – Education/Training/Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with current live NMC Registration.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Teaching and assessing qualification (998 or equivalent) is desirable.
Work Experience
* Completion of training for additional clinical skills required in the ward/department (IV drug administration, cannulation, venipuncture, male catheterisation, ECG training).
* Experience as a Registered Nurse in the last 12 months in an acute setting, or a qualifying student who has completed a placement in area.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
* Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, including report writing and record keeping.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Sound knowledge of the NMC code of professional conduct and current nursing issues.
* Computer/IT skills and expected to develop these in line with the needs of the service (CareFlow, ICE, Microsoft Teams, email).
