Job Title: Gardener
Start Date: October 2025
Pay Rate: Self-employed or PAYE £16.00ph
Hours: 16 hours a month – Alternate Mondays (hours to be discussed at interview)
The Gardener's job is to create, design and maintain the garden areas, Promenade and green spaces.
The Gardener is responsible for maintaining the current grounds to a high standard, providing appropriate care so that the green spaces remain healthy and vigorous. The tasks include, but are not exhaustive:
· Pruning plants, trees, shrubs and hedges.
· Weeding.
· Looking after plants and flowers.
· Managing watering and feeding systems.
· Protect the areas from pests, parasites and other plant illnesses and take appropriate control measures to environmentally friendly treat and care for the green areas.
· Provide design ideas and put forward plans to ensure the green areas are interesting and attractive to visitors.
· Provide own cuttings of plants and flowers and install seasonal plants.
· Be actively involved with The Ropewalk's annual Garden Day, grow your own plants and be present on a stall.
· Make sure areas are clean and tidy.
· Litter pick as and when required.
· Work in conjunction with The Ropewalk's caretaker and maintenance volunteers on larger tasks.
Requirements
The Ropewalk Gardener will have experience and some formal training. and be familiar with landscape design and knowledge of plant life. Some tools will be provided but own tools may be required. The Ropewalk Gardener must have knowledge of basic health and safety, have the ability to lift heavy objects and remain on their feet for long periods at a time. Due to the nature of the job the Ropewalk Gardener must enjoy being outdoors with the tenacity to work in any weather conditions.

* Support and work with the volunteers from time to time on such tasks relating to the Sculpture Garden, green areas and The Promenade.
The Ropewalk Gardener will have quarterly meetings with the CEO and provide an update on any issues or events relating to the green spaces and The Promenade they feel are important. At these meetings, the Ropewalk Gardener will be expected to put ideas forward to improve the current areas. Prior approval will be needed for any changes to the current green spaces and The Promenade in order to keep the areas in keeping with the age of the building and the culture of The Ropewalk.
The working hours are 16 hours per month. The hours will be worked in agreement with the CEO.
We would be happy to accept the contract on either a PAYE or a self-employed basis.
