Scottish Power is seeking an Environmental Advisor (GIS) to join their Cambuslang team on a contract basis initially.


Overview

In this role you will support environmental operations through geospatial data analysis, mapping, and technical assistance, analysing site conditions, monitoring environmental parameters, and creating detailed maps and visualisations that support their practices.


Responsibilities

* Comply with internal Environmental Management System to preserve ISO 14001 accreditation.
* Provide support and advice to the project team prior to and throughout the construction period to achieve compliance with statutory environmental requirements.
* Sustain and improve Environmental Procedures to identify and respond to emerging environmental legislation relevant to construction activities.
* Provide proactive, specialist guidance and advice regarding environmental controls, constraints and legislation specific to the project.
* Develop and implement new methods, techniques and practices to improve environmental performance.
* Develop an Environmental Management Plan for the project ensuring that the findings of the surveys and any licences are included.
* Liaise directly with regulators/stakeholders (such as, but not limited to, Nature Scot) throughout the project.
* Manage environmental monitoring and inspection programs to effectively document operational performance, compliance and prepare timely reports required for both internal and external distribution.
* Support the investigation and reporting of environmental incidents.
* Develop and deliver environmental training and awareness initiatives.
* Review contractors’ environmental documentation with particular emphasis on environmental regulations and requirements.


Data Management & Analysis

* Collect, process, and maintain geospatial data related to development sites and environmental conditions.
* Create and update GIS databases for project locations, equipment placement, and environmental monitoring survey findings.
* Generate regular reports on environmental parameters and environmental conditions.


Documentation & Compliance

* Maintain detailed documentation of GIS workflows and data sources.
* Ensure all geospatial products meet industry standards and regulatory requirements.
* Assist with project development and environmental baseline assessments.
* Support compliance reporting through spatial analysis and mapping.


Skills & Requirements

* Proven experience of environmental management, including working knowledge of ISO 14001, environmental auditing, and dealing with the environmental regulator, ideally within a commercially focused utility, service or construction business.
* Experience, knowledge and good understanding of ecological and hydrological aspects on construction sites.
* Educated to a degree level in a relevant environmental discipline is essential.
* In‑depth knowledge of current and developing environmental legislation is essential.
* Strong influencing and consulting/communication skills.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a confident speaker.
* Sound planning and analysis skills – anticipate problems and plan solutions.
* Experience of collaboration with contractors.
* Membership of a professional body relevant to this role is desirable.
* Environmental Auditing qualification is desirable.
* Computer literacy and working knowledge of Microsoft Packages.
* CSCS card or Safety Passport.
* Current valid driving licence.


Minimum Qualifications

* Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Marine Science, or related field.
* 2‑5 years of professional GIS experience.
* 3+ years’ experience in an on‑site environmental role within an engineering or construction related environment.
* Proficiency in QGIS, ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online.
* Knowledge and experience of spatial databases and data formats (shapefiles, geodatabases, rasters).
* Familiarity with GPS equipment and data collection methods.
* Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
* Excellent attention to detail and data quality control.
