Homebirth Team Midwife

Continuity‑led care

* Case‑loading a small cohort of women, from referral through to handover to the health visitor.
* Flexible shift pattern: Rotating mix of long days, standard days, and night‑on‑call duty and weekend working.
* Awarded recognition: Uplifted NHS pay (4.5%) for on‑call shifts under Agenda for Change.


Care you will provide

* Specialist midwifery care for women planning homebirths and birth centre births ("domino care")
* Support for women planning births outside of standard guidelines, collaborating closely with consultant midwives to ensure safety


Who We’re Looking For

* Qualifications: At least 12 months post‑registration, including recent intrapartum experience.
* Skills: Strong communicator; committed to delivering personalised, safe, and innovative care
* Characteristics: Proactive, creative, and confident working independently and within a supportive team

Ideal Candidate

* Lives within 30 minutes of hospital
* Passionate about continuity of carer and personalised birth experiences
* Exposure to recent intrapartum practice, confident managing complex or out‑of‑guideline scenarios


Main duties of the job


Clinical Responsibilities

* Comprehensive Midwifery Care: Provide care across all stages of pregnancy, intrapartum, and postnatal periods for a caseload of women.
* Promote Birth Choices: Actively support and facilitate homebirth, DOMINO, and birth centre care options for women.
* Collaborative Care: Work closely with the multi‑disciplinary team to ensure safe and high‑standard care for mothers and babies.
* Skill Development: Continuously develop and maintain midwifery skills in line with best practices.
* Role Development: Contribute to the development of midwifery practice and the introduction of new roles within the service.
* Drug Administration: Safely manage and administer medications in accordance with Trust policies and statutory regulations.


Professional Responsibilities

* Adhere to NMC Standards: Uphold the NMC Code of Conduct and work within the Trust’s policies and protocols.
* Effective Communication: Maintain strong relationships within the midwifery team and with other healthcare professionals.
* Continuous Professional Development: Engage in ongoing learning and attend mandatory training to maintain and enhance clinical skills.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Registered Midwife BSc or equivalent degree
* Evidence of professional progression
* NMC Midwife registration


Knowledge & Nature of Experience

* Evidence of completion of band 5 preceptorship programme
* Effective internet and IT skills
* IV drug administration
* CTG interpretation
* Able to demonstrate awareness of research related to midwifery practice
* Positive attitude to change and inspires confidence
* Demonstrates innovation
* Cannulation and suturing knowledge and skills
* Epidural Management


Analytical and Judgement Skills

* Confident and competent midwife practitioner


Professional / Managerial / Specialist Knowledge

* Demonstrates evidence of commitment to professional development.
* Demonstrates an awareness of role of facilitator and evidence of ability to educate others.
* Evidence of good written and oral communication skills
* Demonstrates understanding of the importance of supportive working in a team.
* Ability to understand and adhere to the equal opportunities policy
* Willing to complete all mandatory training
* Willing to work on established Nursing/Midwifery information systems, EPR or the relevant information system related to post


Personal Skills / Abilities and Attributes

* Resource for communication with and dissemination of information from the multidisciplinary team
* Ability to work days / nights/ flexible shifts
* Rotation in all areas of the unit including the core and group practice
* Strategies to cope with stress / work pressures.
* Demonstrate alignment with the values and beliefs of the Trust
* Demonstrate an understanding of the practices of equality and inclusion in the delivery of this role
* Punctual and flexible across hours of work when required

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
