Offer description

The Environment Agency are fully committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering flexible work arrangements for all our vacancies. Join us in a diverse environment where every voice is heard and valued.

Do you want to effectively regulate the energy sectors to create a better place? The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving a transformation in the energy sectors as they’re responsible for 24% of UK Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. They will need to fully decarbonise by 2050 whilst doubling electricity production. Concerns about energy security provide additional pressures to quickly transition to new sustainable sources of power, whilst maximising domestic sources of energy.

Through effective regulation, we must ensure that energy sectors protect people and the environment from emissions, as well as mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change.

Responsibilities

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance and training.
* Develop strategy for our sectors and produce the tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects where needed.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players.
* Respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

Experience and Skills

* Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, including experience of regulating combustion plants, waste incineration and refineries, with knowledge of control measures for emissions to air.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
* Work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.

We are fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, so please include clearly any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application. We also have a Guaranteed Interview Policy to support those with a disability who are seeking employment.

Applications will be “blind” assessed using your answers to the competency questions. Feedback is generally not available at the application stage. For questions relating to this role, please contact Emma Preston or Charlotte Sholl at combustion@environment-agency.gov.uk.

This vacancy closes end of October. Interviews are expected to be held in person in Birmingham by the end of November. The role may require some travel. If you consent to be recruited onto a reserve list, we’ll hold your details for 6 months and may offer you an alternative post.

Length of contract: Up to 2 years.

Applicants from the Civil Service should note that the Environment Agency is not part of HM Civil Service and you would not be a Crown Servant upon appointment. Continuous service eligibility may apply under certain circumstances. Contact your HR team for clarification.

The Environment Agency, as a Non-Departmental Public Body, is committed to providing value for money and utilises Central Government frameworks and contracts for all external recruitment needs.
