Job overview

* An exciting opportunity for an experienced and confident Clinical Support Worker to join the POA team at FHG on a fixed term contract covering maternity leave.
* Work in support of and under the direction of a Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse, providing nursing care and assistance to patients within defined parameters specified by the Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse (RN).
* Provide basic patient care and document that care in the patient records.
* Perform Relevant Clinical Skills: Phlebotomy / ECG


Main duties of the job

Work effectively with the multidisciplinary team in order to achieve desired outcomes that promote the wellbeing of patients.

Assist the RN’s in the delivery of care to a designated patient group, demonstrating an ability to prioritise such care.

Assist in the implementation of direct clinical care.

Determine the comfort of patients by talking and listening to them and building up a rapport.

Ensure that all care provided by yourself is documented appropriately.

Recognise changes in patient condition and report to a RN.

Ensure patient dignity and individual patient needs are met.

Support RN’s in providing information and advice on health promotion.

Responsible for high standards of cleanliness and follow all guidelines set by infection control policy.

Undertake training and practice of agreed clinical competencies in basic nursing skills for designated area.

Keep up to date with changes in clinical practice and the effect of these on your role.

Work as an effective team member of the clinical team and support continued team development.

Carry out and record basic observation/test results and report changes to a Pre-Operative Assessment Nurse (RN).

Undertakes simple procedures using aseptic technique.

Performs a range of relevant clinical skills e.g. Phlebotomy, ECG.


Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Person specification


experience and skills

* Good general education including literacy and numeracy skills.
* Evidence of venepuncture skills.
* Experience of manual handling of patient.
* Previous experience of working in a care environment.
* Able to accurately update patient records for care delivered including changes to patient condition.
* Ability to carry out routine duties acting on own initiative with limited supervision.
* Ability to use IT skills proficiently on using relevant IT systems.
* Ability to supervise others eg T-level students, new Band 3 CSW etc.
* Caring, Self motivated, Enthusiastic, Approachable, Diplomatic, Innovative and Flexible.
* ECDL or equivalent.
* Experience of recording ECG's.
* Previous experience in OPD.


Education & Qualifications

* Completion of the NHS Care Certificate or equivalent relevant experience to vocational qualification level 3, or a willingness to undertake this.
* Good standard of basic English and Maths.
* Knowledge and skills at manual handling of patients using lifting aids and adaptions.
* Good standard of basic IT skills such as emailing, Teams and Word / Excel.
