Department Ophthalmology

Hours: 32 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

We are seeking an enthusiastic, friendly, approachable registered nurse to come and work in Ophthalmology.

You will be part of the nursing team where you will be expected to deliver excellent patient care.The Eye Clinic is a busy, dynamic department which has just gone through a big relocation to Lloyds Court CDC which is an offsite premises. Your duties on the department will include clinic work as well as working in procedure rooms assisting clinicians and nurses to deliver treatments to patients.

Our patients come from all backgrounds and are all ages so you will need to be adaptable. Ideally you will have prior ophthalmic knowledge and skills, but training will be given if not by way of a competency package.

Main duties of the job

To provide effective professional and managerial leadership to nursing staff in the absence of the Outpatients Sisters; to be the Outpatients representative if the Outpatients Sisters are unavailable; to maintain a high standard of nursing care across the department in accordance with Trust policies; to ensure that all lines of communication are identified and used effectively.

Job responsibilities

Professional

To develop the health promotion function of the Eye Clinic with the Senior Sister. For example, targeted information and high-quality display boards. To contribute to the continuing development of the department and support the implementation and evaluation of new projects/developments

Management and clinical

To continually learn and develop ophthalmic skills to suit the service To be competent at assessing a range of fact or situations requiring comparison on a range of options

Personal Development

To maintain own personal and professional growth, by reading journals, attending study days and learning from peers Attend and keep up to date mandatory training

Person Specification


Qualifications and knowledge

* RGN/RN Adult
* Professional/clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level
* Basic Life Support (BLS) training
* ENB 998/MSPP or equivalent or practice supervisor assessor training
* Recognised Ophthalmic nurse's course.
* 1st line management course


Experience

* Recent acute nursing knowledge and experience
* Demonstrable knowledge of the following: -Current issues in nursing - NMC Code of Professional Practice competency skills - Infection Control - Ophthalmic nursing experience


Skills

* Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills
* Able to direct and supervise unregistered nurses
* Demonstrable evidence of delivering quality patient care
* Up to date clinical skills appropriate ophthalmology


Personal and people development

* Motivated / positive & enthusiastic
* Demonstrable ability to work under pressure
* Able to work as part of a team
* Able to work evenings and weekends
* Evidence of ongoing professional development
* Understanding of the role of the ophthalmic nurse

* Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
