Head Gardener – Cheshire. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to join the gardens within a private estate located near Mobberley, Cheshire. The owners now require an experienced gardener with a proven track record of managing a horticulturally diverse garden to assist in the ongoing maintenance and development of the garden and grounds. This is a full-time permanent position which will give the successful applicant an opportunity to collaborate with the principles to develop the gardens further to become a truly spectacular open space.
The estate includes grazing paddocks for the owner’s horses, 3-acres of formal lawns, woodland, meadow, plentiful herbaceous borders, new and existing hedgerows, a variety of mature and newly planted trees, as well as a pond, paths, tracks and equestrian facilities including a 30x50m riding arena and a new, traditional stable yard. The owners are in the process of creating a new garden with the project is still ongoing and the owners are looking for the right person to care and nurture for the new plants, shrubs, trees and hedges, enhancing this carefully thought out, developing canvas.
Our client seeks an experiencedgardener with a creative flair to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Suitable applicants will ideally possess a recognised horticultural qualification, PA1 & PA6 spraying certificates, as well as extensive experience in horticulturally diverse gardens in a private estate setting. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a diverse garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed around the estate with additional duties including but not limited to basic repairs and painting etc. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.
The owners are passionate about their garden and are open to ideas the Head Gardener will have with regards to the development of the gardens. The successful candidate will be required to work and manage one other gardener who is there to assist for as many days as the Head Gardener sees fit, plus external contractors as and when needed. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery, which ideally the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services. Working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm, or alternatively, 4 full days with 2 half days, with holiday entitlement being 20 days plus Bank Holidays. Candidates will also need to provide evidence of qualifications held and hold a full driver’s licence.
SALARY: Up to £36,000 DOE
