Junior Sister/Charge Nurse - Critical Care Unit

Job Summary

We are looking for a proactive, enthusiastic, caring and compassionate individual with significant critical care experience and excellent communication skills to join our dynamic and innovative Critical Care Outreach team (iMobile).

The iMobile team supports early recognition, escalation and management of deteriorating patients in areas outside of Critical Care, assessing, treating and stabilising patients, carrying out rapid transfers to critical care and following up patients after discharge from Critical Care. Delivering patient safety education and training (including simulation days) for ward staff is integral to the role. The team provides teaching focused on early recognition and prevention of patient deterioration incorporating a human factors approach. We work collaboratively with the Critical Care units and iMobile service at the Denmark Hill site for both patient care and education. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our dedicated Critical Care workforce in a prestigious Trust with a focus on patient-centred care.


Main duties of the job

The iMobile team supports the hospital with recognition, escalation and management of deteriorating patients. Support is provided for ward teams with assessing, treating and stabilising patients, rapid transfers to critical care, and follow up after discharge from Critical Care. We are looking for a proactive, enthusiastic, caring and compassionate individual with leadership and communication skills who will enjoy working in an ever-changing clinical environment. Delivering patient safety education and training (including simulation days) for ward staff is integral to the role. The iMobile service has been recognised by Trust CQC inspections as an 'Outstanding Area of Practice'. The Critical Care department offers well-established teaching and staff development programmes and is affiliated to King\'s College London as a member of the King\'s Health Partners Academic Health Science Centre.


Job responsibilities

* The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities.
* Observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of King\'s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
* Observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.
* Be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.
* Clinical responsibilities include advanced Critical Care expertise, autonomous decision-making within iMobile protocols, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to assess, manage, and treat patients outside the ICU setting.
* Provide direct bedside support until patients are stabilised or relocated to a higher level of care, including delivery of specified critical care therapies on the ward.
* Support the patient in transitioning between ward and critical care nursing.
* Act as a resource for the multidisciplinary team, patients and relatives; provide accurate information and guidance.
* Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills to ensure understanding by patients, relatives and the team.
* Model professional nursing practice and support the development of other nurses.


Education and Training

* Enthusiastic about education with demonstrated experience in teaching, supervision and assessment of practice.
* Deliver deteriorating patient education and training for qualified health care professionals and students to promote recognition and escalation of clinical deterioration.
* Contribute to wider educational activities within Critical Care, including attendance and delivery of educational activities to the multi-disciplinary team.
* Promote and encourage application of research and evidence-based practices.
* Maintain a portfolio of responsibility including clinical guidance, audit, research and service development; undertake required training for the post.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse (RN1) with active NMC registration
* Post-registration qualification in Mentorship/Practice Assessor
* Post-registration award in critical care nursing


Experience

* Proven experience in managing critically ill patients, with first and second line support.
* Ability to organise and manage day-to-day departmental activities and a large multidisciplinary team.
* Strong communication skills with patients and staff across professions.
