Senior Orthopaedic Practitioner

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Team has a new exciting development opportunity for a Senior Orthopaedic Practitioner to join the team.

The role would be suitable for a senior Registered Nurse or Allied Health Care Professional with experience in Trauma and Orthopaedics who is keen to develop competencies and skills in this highly specialised area.

The successful candidate will work alongside our Consultants in orthopaedic clinic reviewing and treating fractures and/or associated wounds working as an autonomous practitioner.

The role will consist of working within the Trauma and Orthopaedic Department managing clinic patients at York Hospital and Clifton Park Chapel Clinic. The patients attending clinic will be both adult and paediatric, therefore knowledge and experience of both disciplines would be advantageous.

This is a highly satisfying, but demanding role and it is essential that candidates are extremely motivated, proactive, dedicated and have experience in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

Main duties of the job

* Responsibility for the management of a defined caseload of patients with fracture concerns attending clinics at the Orthopaedic Outpatient Departments.
* Continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinic patient treatments and the setting of standards of care based upon NICE/BOA guidelines.
* Interpretation of x-rays and managing the ongoing care of patients in alignment with best evidence based practice.
* If working as a non-medical prescriber, to initiate and prescribe treatment and evaluate its clinical effectiveness.
* Undertake audit activity and lead on the implementation of service development plans
* Provide clinical leadership within the multi-disciplinary team and provide training for junior members of the team
* Escalation of clinical concerns to the appropriate Lead Orthopaedic Consultant

Person Specification


Experience & Knowledge

* Experience of managing patients who are antagonistic or distressed.
* To be an active member as appropriate of any in-service training programme by attendance and presentation at staff meetings, tutorials, training sessions, external courses and reflective practice.
* Understanding the role of Orthopaedic Practitioner within the current environment
* Evidence of CPD - reviewing current practice and research developments within the musculoskeletal arena and application to clinical practice.
* To undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients, including those with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills and formulating an appropriate treatment plan. This will include extended role assessment and treatment. The potential to develop skills as a supplementary or independent prescriber will be considered as part of the team design
* To communicate effectively and work collaboratively with medical, nursing, radiography, podiatry and therapy colleagues, to ensure delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service. This will include listing for surgical procedures, organising case conferences, MDT meetings, and discharge planning
* To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload, and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time. This will involve co-ordinating the work of other staff to deliver treatment programmes.


Skills & Attributes

* Expert clinical practitioner
* Expert knowledge of the mechanisms and treatment models for orthopaedic conditions
* Exceptional team building and team working skills
* Able to present information, written and orally in a clear and logical fashion


Education & Qualifications

* Degree/diploma in relevant healthcare profession
* Health Professions Council or equivalent registration
* Masters level or equivalent in specialist area or evidence of significant practical experience
* Experience of working in the NHS
