DBS0876 Infant Feeding Public Health Assistant

North Tyneside Council are recruiting an InfantFeeding Public Health Assistant to work within the Childrens Public HealthService (CPHS).

Would you like to be part of an innovative skill mix team of health visitors,school nurses, public health staff nurses and child development practitioners?

This is your chance to work with an outstanding group of safeguarding andhealth professionals. The service has close working relationships with theearly help service, multiagency safeguarding hub (MASH), education, housing,primary care, midwifery services and sport and leisure, which ensures goodoutcomes for families and provides positive working relationships forcolleagues.

The Signs of Safety model is embedded throughout the service androbust safeguarding supervision is provided to colleagues by Safeguarding NurseAdvisors. North Tyneside Childrens Social Care has been graded Outstanding byOfsted in 2024.

Colleagues are providedwith support and supervision from the Infant Feeding Specialist and NurseManager throughout their probationary period and beyond and have access to anidentified mentor.


Main duties of the job

Are you a motivated and enthusiastic individualwith knowledge of basic feeding practices, current issues relating to publichealth priorities and have experience working with children and families?

CQCinspection in 2022 rated the service as Good with Outstanding Leadershipstating 'All those responsible for delivering care were committed to workingcollaboratively as a team to benefit children, young people and their families.They supported each other to provide good care and communicated effectively withother agencies.

The service was reaccredited in March 2025 with the UNICEF Baby Friendly GoldAward.

The post holder will support the Infant Feeding Specialist (IFS) and the widerteam in delivering a range of services to improve health outcomes for childrenand families by supporting, inspiring, and encouraging families to achievetheir feeding goals. They will support and promote breastfeeding across theBorough, working in line with service policy and UNICEF Baby FriendlyInitiative standards.

The essential requirements of the post are: GCSE Maths and English orequivalent, and the ability to meet the travel requirements of the post.

Job responsibilities

The purpose of the job is to improve the health andwellbeing of children, young people and families, and addressing inequalitiesthrough the delivery of the healthy child programme and working as part of askill mixed team.

The 0-19 Childrens Public Health Service Assistantfor infant feeding is a member of the 0-19 childrens public health service andwill be based with one of the four locality teams working across the boroughof North Tyneside, promoting and supporting best practice in all aspects ofinfant feeding.

To assist the Infant Feeding Specialist (IFS) andwider 0-19 team in delivering a range of services to improve health outcomesfor children and families by supporting, inspiring, and encouraging families toachieve their feeding goals. This includes the support and promotion of breastfeeding across the borough working in line with service policy and the UNICEFBaby Friendly Initiative standards.

Toassist with a range of tasks including administrative work, breast pump loans,supporting families in their homes and supporting the IFS with stafftraining.

Job Content:

* Promotethe 0-19 service offer to families in North Tyneside
* To helppromote healthy lifestyles for families in North Tyneside at health events, inschools and community venues.
* To helpwith general administrative duties for the team, including purchasing resourcesusing methods such as petty cash.
* Tocomplete data entry on SystmOne and other relevant methods of recordingadhering to the record keeping guidelines
* Toconform to policy and guidance on obtaining consent and maintainingconfidentiality
* To beaware of safeguarding policy and procedures and understand the importance ofescalating concerns to minimise risk to children
* Works topolicies and standards in infant feeding across the service
* Worksclosely with Infant Feeding Specialist to support families
* Provides support to 0-19 staff for infantfeeding
* Supportswith Baby Friendlyaudits
* Consistently considers the needsof babies, their mothers and families are met through effective integrated working
* Supports peer led breastfeeding support groups and virtual infantfeeding sessions
* Assists with breast pump loans, as well asannual servicing of electric breast pumps
* Promotesbreast feeding campaigns and aids in facilitating events
* Achievement of service delivery targets andpersonal targets set in annual IPR.
* Positive contribution to integrated working andthe outcomes indicators of the 0-19 Locality Teams.
* Ensure that practice meets the requirements ofthe 0-19 Childrens Public Health Clinical Governance Framework
* Ensure that practicemeets requirements of nationally recognised UNICEF Baby Friendly Standards.
* Demonstrates high degree of professionalismpersonally
* Adheres to risk management processes andmanagement control measures.
* Active contribution is made towards promotingthe highest standards of health & safety.
* Demonstrates effective communication skills withfamilies, children and relevant professionals
* Ability to use IT systems i.e. email, excel,SystmOne
* Knowledgeof health and safety standards in order to carry out risk assessments in areaswhere sessions are delivered.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* GCSE Maths and English or equivalent
* Formal training in infant feeding support


Experience

* Experience of working with children and families
* Experience of facilitating group sessions
* Proven ability to work as part of a team
* Able to plan and organise own workload
* Able to communicate effectively with local families in diverse communities
* Able to work as part of a team or on own initiative with minimal supervision
* Recent experience in supporting breastfeeding women
* Experience and understanding of basic breastfeeding management
* Group facilitation or teaching certificate


Knowledge

* Knowledge of basic infant feeding practices
* Knowledge of community working
* Ability to recognise when referral to another professional is necessary
