Overview

Clinical Fellow in Urology at Ipswich Hospital. This is a fixed term post until 30 September 2026. The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at Ipswich Hospital, with occasional requirements at other parts of the Trust.


Responsibilities

* Provide cover as a general urologist for elective and emergency work.
* Participate in a 1 in 8 week on‑call rota (registrar level) with prospective cover.
* Supervise junior staff and participate in a regular teaching programme.
* Contribute to weekly urology meetings (MDT/stone committee) and monthly departmental audit meetings.
* Develop subspecialist expertise in stone disease management, including obtaining percutaneous access for PCNL and skills for stone removal.
* Perform flexible ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy as routine practice.
* Undertake open and laparoscopic renal surgical training if desired (shared with the Urological Cancer Fellow).
* Learn to perform ESWL as part of training where available.


Training and Development

The postholder will have opportunities for a range of surgical training and to gain experience in percutaneous nephrolithotomy and other stone-related interventions. Open and laparoscopic renal procedures will be offered where appropriate and shared with the Urological Cancer Fellow.

Role Details

The post holder will be employed as a full-time Urology Clinical Fellow on a 40-hour week basis. Responsibilities include:

* Core and specialist urological surgical procedures on the applicant’s own operating list for patients under the care of Consultant Urological Surgeons.
* Outpatient clinics held weekly at Colchester General Hospital or other trust sites.
* Day case surgery and diagnostic day case procedures including flexible cystoscopy and urodynamics.
* Educational supervision of junior medical staff.
* Participation in clinical audit and local governance initiatives.
* Contributing to the writing of basic science and clinical papers.
* Contributing to weekly MDT meetings.
* Managerial responsibilities where appropriate.
* Formation of a 1 in 8 on‑call rota with prospective cover.
