Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Swindon
Salary: £40K - £55k DOE
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Hours: Monday – Thursday 8am – 4:30pm and Friday 8am – 1pm
A rare opportunity has opened for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a specialist engineering team at a genuinely exciting point in its growth. This position is ideal for an ambitious graduate or early‑career engineer who wants to develop into a pivotal technical role and contribute to cutting-edge remote handling and robotic tooling solutions.
You’ll be working on complex mechanical systems, bespoke mechanisms, and innovative tooling for remote operations — including robot/manipulator tooling used in highly regulated environments. The role blends concept design, detailed engineering, prototyping, and hands-on testing, offering a unique chance to help shape world-leading products within a respected supplier to the nuclear decommissioning sector.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Designing complex mechanical systems, mechanisms, and special-purpose machinery
Developing robotic/manipulator tooling from concept through to prototype and test
Producing 3D CAD models and drawings (preferably using Autodesk Inventor & Vault)
Applying GD&T to BS8888:2020 standards
Performing mechanical calculations and analysis to support design decisions
Creating designs suitable for machining, welding, and 3D‑printed manufacture
Working within structured New Product Development processes
Presenting technical topics clearly to varied audiences
Collaborating within a multi-disciplinary engineering team while also working independently
Essential Experience:
Demonstrable experience in mechanical system design, especially mechanisms or special-purpose machinery
Strong 3D CAD capability and understanding of CAD administration
Solid knowledge of GD&T (BS8888:2020)
Understanding of manufacturing methods: machining, welding, 3D prototyping
Ability to perform mechanical calculations/analysis
Experience with concept development from a clean sheet
Strong communication skills, written and verbal
Naturally inquisitive, proactive, and strong problem-solving ability
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Comfortable working independently and within a multi-disciplinary team
Desirable Experience:
Remote handling equipment design or engineering for radioactive environments
Producing engineering reports, procedures, and requirements
Knowledge of project management processes
Advanced user of Autodesk Inventor and Vault
Hands-on workshop skills for prototyping
Experience designing sheet‑metal components and assemblies
Willingness to represent the company at client sites, conferences, and exhibitions
Basic understanding of electrical design
