Freelance – Quantity Surveyor
Location: Derby (Office-Based)
Duration: 3+ Months (Strong Potential to Extend)
Rate: Competitive – Outside IR35 (Discussed on Application)
We are currently seeking an experienced Freelance Quantity Surveyor to support a growing workload and strong order book for a well-established civil engineering contractor based in the Midlands.
This is an office-based role in Derby, and candidatesmust be happy to attend the office full-time,particularly during the initial stages, to ensure effective collaboration and support.
The Role
As a Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for the commercial management of live civil engineering projects. Your duties will include:
Financial management of assigned contracts
Monthly valuations and cost reporting
Placing and managing subcontractor orders
Managing variations and change control
Ensuring accurate and timely subcontractor payments
Supporting procurement, cost control, and contract administration
Working closely with the delivery and commercial teams to ensure successful project outcomes
This role is required to help manage a high workflow and offers strong potential for extension beyond the initial contract period.
About You
Minimum 3+ years’ experience in a Quantity Surveying role
Civil engineering background is essential – applications will only be considered from candidates with experience in:
Highways
Energy
Water
Heavy civils / infrastructure
Experience on projects such as energy schemes, substations, battery storage, or similar infrastructure works is highly desirable
Confident managing subcontractors, project finances, and commercial reporting
Proactive, hands-on approach with strong communication skills
Comfortable working in an office-based team environment
