Typically, this person will be:
A skilled Fabricator/Plater with experience in shipbuilding or heavy steel fabrication, capable of assembling, installing, and outfitting complex ship structures to high quality standards. You will have strong drawing interpretation skills, a clear understanding of SHE regulations, and the ability to work effectively within a production-driven maritime environment.
You will be hands-on, safety-conscious, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team to deliver projects on time and to specification.
Key Responsibilities of Fabricator – Plater:
•Comply with all SHE regulations and safe working practices
•Marking-off materials and interpreting fabrication drawings
•Assembly of ship structures including shell, decks, bulkheads, frames and longitudinals
•Fit and fair steelwork using fairing aids
•Fabricate ship components including seats, ladders, panels and flooring
•Outfitting activities including installation of hatches, watertight doors and equipment supports
•Operate rolling, flanging and cutting machinery (guillotine, cropper, mechanical saw)
•Carry out plate preparation using oxy-fuel cutting and grinding
•Support ship docking, pressure testing, drilling and lock fitting activities
•Prepare vessels for launch and sea trials
•Maintain quality standards and meet production targets
•Engage with supervisors and other trades to resolve shop floor issues
Essential Skills & Qualifications:
•Strong understanding of fabrication and installation drawings
•Knowledge of manufacturing processes within shipbuilding or heavy engineering
•Clear understanding of SHE risk awareness
•Practical fabrication and assembly skills
•Ability to problem solve and adapt to changing work practices
•Good communication skills and team-focused approach
•Coaching ability to support apprentices (desirable)
•Relevant trade papers
•Safety certifications (SHE induction, COSHH awareness, Working at Height etc.)
