About the Role

We are recruiting for a full‑time Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Buckinghamshire CAMHS Recovery and Support Pathway and work with a well‑established multi‑disciplinary team in the Sue Nichols Centre, Aylesbury and Saffron House, High Wycombe.

You will provide psychiatric clinical input and leadership within a recently redesigned service delivering targeted mental health care to children and young people with predominantly emotional disorders, including neurodivergent young people.

The Recovery Teams are structured to support two cohorts: young people who benefit from Focussed Intervention and Recovery Support (FIRS) and Specialist Intervention and Recovery Support (SIRS). These teams are a core part of Buckinghamshire CAMHS providing support for young people who are experiencing a moderate to severe mental health condition such as depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and bipolar disorder.

You will work 10 programmed activities with a job plan typically comprising 75% direct clinical care and 25% supporting professional activities, in line with Royal College of Psychiatrists’ guidance. Opportunities are available to develop interests in service development, quality improvement, and teaching and training within a well‑established, supportive multi‑disciplinary team and consultant peer group.


Main duties of the job

* Provide senior psychiatric clinical input to the Buckinghamshire CAMHS Recovery Teams, holding and managing a defined consultant‑level caseload and contributing to new psychiatric assessments and internal case allocations.
* Offer specialist advice and clinical leadership for complex and high‑risk cases, including guidance on risk assessment and risk management, and actively participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, post‑assessment discussions, and service planning forums.
* Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the wider MDT, providing flexibility and cross‑cover as required to support a fair and equitable allocation of work and to maintain the team’s established culture of peer support.
* Contribute to service development, quality improvement and evaluation initiatives, as well as participating in teaching and training activities for medical students and trainees. Supporting Professional Activities will be undertaken in line with Royal College of Psychiatrists’ recommendations and agreed service priorities.

Person specification

* Fully registered with the General Medical Council
* Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview)
* Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
* Eligible for Section 12 Approval (Mental Health Act) / Approved Clinician or willing to apply for such approval once in post.
* A higher degree such as MD or PhD
* Additional clinical qualifications
* In good standing with GMC with respect to warnings and conditions on practice
* In good standing with RCPsych with respect to CPD
* Experience of clinical work in Child and adolescent Psychiatry at SpR, SAS/Specialist grade or consultant level within the last 3 years
* Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
* Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices
* Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry
* Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health
* Experience of working at consultant level in a community CAMHS team


Clinical Skills and Supervision

* Excellent clinical skills in relevant psychiatric specialty
* Ability to work in a multi‑disciplinary team and provide clinical leadership to the team
* Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
* Expertise in risk assessment
* Confident in therapeutic risk taking
* Commitment to clinical governance
* Wide range of specialist and sub‑specialist experience relevant to post
* Experience in supervising resident doctors and SAS doctors
* Experience in supervising non‑medical colleagues e.g. NMP


Teaching

* Experience in teaching resident doctors
* Good teaching and communication skills
* Experience of teaching medical undergraduates and postgraduates
* Experience of teaching non‑medical mental health professionals


Research and Audit

* Experience of research work and/or ability to interpret research findings and apply them to clinical practice
* Audit or other quality improvement experience
* Experience of grant‑funded project work
* Publications in peer‑reviewed journals in relevant academic fields


Other

* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
* UK driving licence or evidence of proposed alternative
