Main duties of the job
* George Eliot Hospital is seeking a Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine to join a dynamic and supportive Elderly Care Department delivering high-quality, patient-centred care for older adults.
* The service provides comprehensive geriatric assessment through a multidisciplinary team, with a strong focus on holistic care, admission avoidance, and early intervention to maintain independence and improve outcomes. The role will support the development of the Acute Frailty Service, including an enhanced front-door model and close working with community teams and ambulance services.
* Inpatient and orthogeriatric services remain integral, supported by dedicated beds and specialist teams. Opportunities exist to develop clinical interests alongside existing frailty, falls, and movement disorder services.
* The Trust offers strong professional support, including a new consultant support programme, CPD opportunities, and flexible working to promote a healthy work-life balance.
* Clinics for general frailty, falls and movement disorders exist; there is scope for new colleagues to pursue further areas of clinical interest by agreement.

Job description
Job responsibilities
* The post holder is a senior clinician within the Elderly Care multidisciplinary team, leading high-quality, patient-centred care for frail and older adults across the acute setting. They provide expert clinical leadership, specialist advice, and day-to-day support to colleagues, contributing to complex clinical and ethical decisions.
* The role supports a 7-day Acute Frailty Service and includes accurate documentation and administrative duties. The post holder participates in the General Medical on-call rota, providing onsite cover and overnight responsibilities. They offer visible leadership, supervise junior staff, and contribute to strategic development across local and regional networks.
* The role includes leading service improvement, supporting clinical governance, undertaking audits, and contributing to patient safety and risk management. They support implementation of clinical guidance and policy. Education duties include CPD, teaching undergraduates, GP trainees, ACPs, PAs, and nurses, and delivering Elderly Care teaching sessions.
* The post holder may supervise 12 ACPs/PAs and 12 resident doctors. They identify research opportunities, develop academic links, and support local research activity. Annual appraisal and revalidation are supported in line with Royal College of Physicians requirements.
* The post holder will function as a key member of the Elderly Care multidisciplinary team, providing senior clinical leadership and managing an inpatient caseload for frail and older adults. The role supports the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care across the acute setting.

Person Specification
Essential
* Completion or near completion of a specialist training programme in Geriatric and general medicine.
* Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice.
* Eligibility for inclusion on the specialist registrar in geriatric and general medicine within 6 months of the AAC date.
* MRCP or equivalent.
* Broad clinical experience in care of the elderly and general medicine.
Desirable
* Understanding of the NHS Experience outside the speciality.
* Higher degree; evidence of sub-speciality or other specific training.
* Evidence of interest in research.
* Ability to lead, communicate, liaise and negotiate with others.
* Ability to work within a multi-professional and multi-disciplinary framework.
* Good organisational and leadership skills.
