Role Overview As a Shift Engineer, you will be responsible for the safe, efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a wide range of electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems. Your core objective will be to maintain 100% system uptime through proactive maintenance, effective change control, and swift incident response.
You will also manage sub-contractors, oversee preventative maintenance schedules, and help deliver a resilient, compliant, and high-performing engineering service.
Key Responsibilities
* Operate and maintain electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems.
* Monitor, log, and troubleshoot all plant and equipment, resolving incidents promptly.
* Manage critical building systems, including:
o Low and medium voltage electrical systems
o Mechanical plant and HVAC systems
o UPS and generator systems
o Fire detection and suppression systems
o Domestic and chilled water systems
* Perform authorised low and high voltage switching operations.
* Utilise systems such as:
o BMS (Building Management System)
o PMS (Power Monitoring System)
o CMS (Control & Monitoring System)
* Oversee and support the delivery of PPM (Planned Preventative Maintenance).
* Coordinate sub-contracted engineers, ensuring safety, quality, and compliance.
* Follow operational and change management procedures, using service desk/ticketing systems.
Desirable Experience & Qualifications
* Completed engineering apprenticeship or equivalent.
* HND or equivalent in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (preferred).
* Experience in high-pressure, mission-critical environments (e.g., data centres).
* Industry-recognised certifications (e.g., NCC, REC, or equivalent).
* Strong working knowledge of:
o Low and medium voltage systems
o HVAC and mechanical plant
o Electrical safety regulations and best practices
Key Attributes
* Strong problem-solving ability, with proficiency in Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
* Experience working within structured change management environments.
* Attention to detail and adherence to safety and compliance protocols.
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
* Self-motivated, proactive, and resilient under pressure.
* Familiarity with BMS systems and CAFM/PPM platforms.
