Job Summary

The Radiology Student Coordinator plays a central role in supporting the education and development of our college and undergraduate learners within the Radiology Department. The position ensures that all students receive a high quality, well organised clinical placement experience by coordinating timetables, supervising day‑to‑day activity, and acting as the primary point of contact for learners and academic partners. Working closely with radiographers, clinical leads, university teams and external partners, the coordinator helps maintain an excellent learning environment, supports student wellbeing and contributes to developing the future workforce.


Main Duties

* Placement coordination – organising student rotas and daily supervision.
* Induction and onboarding – delivering clear introductions to the department, covering safety, policies, expectations and learning opportunities.
* Educational support – ensuring students meet learning outcomes and have access to appropriate clinical opportunities.
* Liaison role – serving as the link between departments, universities and practice educators.
* Quality assurance – maintaining high standards of training, feedback, addressing performance issues and student experience.
* Pastoral support – offering guidance, signposting and mentorship to students throughout their placement.
* Inclusive learning environment – promoting a culture where students feel valued, respected and empowered.
* Risk assessments – ensuring risks are assessed and mitigations put in place, including reasonable adjustments where required.


About Us

We provide hospital services from two acute sites – Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham – and support care in community hospitals, a planned care centre in Bishop Auckland and over 80 other community‑based settings.

Job Description

* Be a key link across clinical teams, working closely with colleagues within and beyond the Imaging Department to ensure patients receive a consistently high quality service.
* Support patients with clarity and compassion, communicating complex instructions in an accessible way.
* Deliver high precision imaging, safely positioning patients and equipment, adjusting exposure parameters and producing diagnostic images of the highest standard.
* Shape and uphold clinical excellence, contributing to the development and review of departmental protocols.
* Lead, support and inspire others, supervising junior radiographers, assistant practitioners, radiography assistants and students.
* Play an active role in student development, organising teaching sessions, practical demonstrations and supporting ongoing learning.
* Champion outstanding patient care, ensuring every clinical duty is carried out to a high professional standard.
* Provide day‑to‑day leadership, including managing workflow (flow duties) within the X‑ray department.
* Work to the highest standards of radiation protection, adhering to IRMER and promoting safe practice at all times.
* Drive service improvement, identifying opportunities to enhance patient experience and implementing new policies.
* Promote a collaborative, supportive team culture, ensuring everyone contributes to delivering a high quality service.
* Manage and prioritise your workload, validating requests and ensuring efficient use of resources within your scope of practice.
* Monitor and maintain quality assurance, ensuring compliance with QA programmes and taking action when standards fall short.
* Respond effectively to equipment issues, following procedures to minimise disruption and maintain safe service delivery.
* Stay current and curious, keeping up to date with developments in Radiology and actively engaging in CPD.
* Ensure incidents and complaints are handled appropriately, recording all issues and escalating those that require wider management.
* Lead and engage staff in student education across the Radiology Directorate, helping to build a strong learning culture.
* Contribute to out‑of‑hours service provision as part of the departmental rota.
* Engage proactively with the NENC Imaging Network, contributing to regional initiatives and sharing best practice.


Person Specification – Essential

* Team building skills
* High quality radiographic skills
* HCPC registration
* High level of competence and experience in managing people
* Leading and implementing change experience
* Protocol and policy development experience
* MSc, BSc or DCR Radiography
* 2 years post‑registration experience
* Student mentorship certificate


Person Specification – Desirable

* Knowledge of T‑Level and Choices courses
* Post‑graduate evidence of working with a variety of students
* Audit and benchmarking experience
* Leadership experience
* Knowledge of T‑Level and Choices courses
