The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Detective Sergeant to join the Surrey & Sussex Major Crime Team (MCT) in the Office Manager (OM) role.
Specialist Crime Command are looking to recruit a highly motivated and capable Detective Sergeant within the Major Crime Team based at Woking Police Station, to work on the most varied, serious and high-profile investigations across Surrey and Sussex.
These include murder, manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter, serious sexual offences & crimes in action.
The OM role is vital to the success of any major crime investigation with our detective sergeants being responsible for driving investigations forward, ensuring that actions are raised in line with the SIO’s priorities and that all the work completed by the team is the highest standard.
The role includes: Supporting the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) in the investigation of major crime, first line supervisor for a team of Detectives and Investigating Officers, additional responsibilities for the Outside Enquiry Team.
You will be expected to manage personnel and relevant actions, read and receive documentation relating to the investigation, identify relevant lines of enquiry and raise actions, complete actions in line with the policies of the SIO, conduct briefings to teams & SIO’s as required, to undertake these responsibilities in Surrey & Sussex force areas.

Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for managing, supporting and developing your team which comprises of Detectives and Investigating Officers.
While managing investigations you will be responsible for staff from different teams across the OET and will ensure the team is aware of the requirements of their duties and updated of any developments.
Work collaboratively with partners both within and outside the Police and across both Surrey and Sussex. Ensure appropriate staffing levels, in line with departmental and force policies.
Work with the Indexing Team Leaders to ensure the Home Office Large and Major Enquiries System (HOLMES) is accurate.
Prepare strategy documents, reflecting lines of enquiry in conjunction with the SIO. Co-ordinate and attend briefings held by the SIO and update those unable to attend.
Track the work within the teams and/or investigations, identify risks, problems and areas of high priority.
Raise appropriate lines of enquiry from other sources of evidence or intelligence.
Read and assess all documents for filing.
Provide guidance for further action.
Ensure all documentation is proofread and dealt with.
Ensure all staff work within the guidelines and statutory requirements.
Work with the Disclosure Officer to ensure all decisions of disclosure are documented on HOLMES.
Maintain a situation report when the SIO deems it necessary.
Work with the SIO and Indexing Team Leader to ensure investigations are closed on HOLMES and a Closing Report is also provided.
Work with colleagues in other SCC Teams at times of demand as well as partner agencies and other police forces.
Undertake other duties appropriate to the rank and character of work as may be reasonably required.
Skills & Experience
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Accredited PIP Level 2 Detective Sergeant
• Accredited Tier Level 2 Witness and Suspect Interviewer
You must have good communication skills.
You must have the ability to manage, motivate, support and develop staff.
You must be highly motivated and resilient and able to manage the pressure and long working hours that come with MCT investigations.
It is vital that you can evidence your experience in criminal investigation, interviewing, case building and managing investigations to very high standards.
You must be organised, able to prioritise and work with minimal supervision.
Very strong investigative decision-making skills and are confident in exercising your own judgement and rationalising your decisions.
The ability to work collaboratively with partners within the Police and outside the Police. Have a sound working knowledge of criminal law and the criminal justice system.
You should have knowledge of Major Incident Room Standard Administrative Procedures (MIRSAP), Force Major Incident Policies and Processes, Investigative APP and the Major Crime Investigation Manual.
You will be comfortable briefing large audiences.
You take responsibility for meeting deadlines and can show your ability to work under pressure.
Able to manage a team and work with changing priorities.
A willingness to learn how to use the Home Office Large and Major Enquiry System (HOLMES) is essential (training will be provided).
Knowledge and understanding of the Police & Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) and the Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act (CPIA).
Willingness to learn both Surrey and Sussex computer systems (training will be provided) and develop Excel skills.
DESIRABLE Knowledge of specialist skills such as specialist witness and suspect interviewer (Tier 3), interview manager (Tier 5), FLO/FLA, DMI and Intel processes are all desirable however there is no requirement to be trained in these.
HOLMES experience would be beneficial but training will be provided so again this is not essential.
