Job overview

The post is available is a 10 PA post. The department has a flexible policy of job planning. We currently run a limited evening and Saturday service, with outsourcing of on call at other times.

Weston General Hospital is developing into a thriving hospital at the heart of the community. The Consultant Radiologist post is a newly created position which involves the development of safe, high-quality and sustainable emergency and planned care accessible to the local people.

The planned changes mean more people can receive the very best treatment and care faster, with shorter stays in hospital supported by closer working with community-based health and social care teams, providing seamless care to our patients.


Main duties of the job

This post is for a General Radiologist to take part in the general workload of the department. A special interest in MSK, Neuro / Spine, GU or GI would be welcomed. Other subspecialty interests may be accommodated upon discussion with the Clinical Lead (John.O’Brien@uhbw.nhs.uk). The Department participates in clinicoradiological meetings / MDTs for Upper and Lower GI, Gynaecology, Myeloma, Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Stroke and the successful applicant will have the opportunity to become a core member of MDT/ meetings depending upon their particular expertise and interest.

Person specification


Qualifications & Training

* Full and Specialist Registration in Clinical Radiology with the General Medical Council (GMC)
* or eligible for specialist registration within 6 months or interview
* Or Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview Please note this does not apply to CESR applications
* FRCR or equivalent
* Teaching or training qualifications


Experience

* Experience of working at or comparable to, the level of a Consultant Clinical Radiologist in the NHS
* Experience of participation at MDTMs
* Subspecialist interest or the willingness to develop subspecialist interest in line with the unit’s needs whilst in post.
* Experience of working in the NHS


Clinical Knowledge & Skills

* Knowledge of the role of clinical governance in current clinical practice
* Ability to take on full & independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
* Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Skills in teaching under and post graduate students.
* Knowledge of research techniques in clinical medicine
* Knowledge of the use of patient databases and IT websites.
* Evidence of appropriate management training


Clinical Governance & Audit

* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
* Positive approach to evidence based practice
* Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation


Research

* Knowledge of the principles involved in research
* Evidence of involvement in research
* Evidence of peer review research papers
* Ability to increase the academic profile of the department.


Teaching & Training

* Experience of teaching medical students.
* Experience of supervising trainees.
* Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team
* Formal teaching qualification
* Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
* Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant
* Ability to practice independently as a consultant
* Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership
* Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks
* Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures


Interpersonal, communication & team working skills

* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff and other colleagues.
* Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.
* Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries
* Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-professional basis with all levels of staff both within and across divisions
* Ability to be a flexible team member
