Consultant Plastic Surgeon interest - Skin Cancer management & Burns

The Directorate of Plastic and Breast Surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit a Whole-time Consultant Plastic Surgeon with Specialist interest in Skin Cancer Management and Burns. The post will primarily be based at the Northern General Hospital but will also work at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Sheffield Children's Hospital.

We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Should any further vacancies arise shortlisted applicants will be considered.


Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with consultant colleagues be responsible for the provision of the burns service to ensure the continued development of the Sheffield Burn Service and will also support the less complex skin service at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Furthermore, the post holder will support the Trauma service at Northern General site for general plastic trauma and semi-elective conditions.

There will be weekly clinics and dedicated theatre lists for the management of all appropriate patients as listed above.

The appointee will be part of a trauma on-call rota (1:18) covering both Trusts involving Northern General, Royal Hallamshire and the Sheffield Children's hospital. They will have continuing responsibility for patients in their care and the proper functioning of the Department. The appointee will undertake outpatient clinics, elective operating sessions, ward round duties and supporting activities.

Job responsibilities

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
* Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview
* If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
* FRCS or equivalent
* MD or PhD or equivalent


Clinical experience

* Specific training in the surgical management of skin cancer.
* Completed specific burns training in a regional burns centre
* Broad experience in general plastic surgery including complex soft tissue reconstruction including chest/abdominal wall and general plastic surgery emergencies.
* Needs to have current Safeguarding Child/Adult competencies, paediatric burns experience/competencies
* Good knowledge of modern surgical techniques including the use of skin substitutes and reconstruction techniques
* Experience in SLNB for malignant melanoma
* Completed a fellowship in surgical treatment of skin cancer
* Completed a recognised burns fellowship


Research

* Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
* Publications in Peer reviewed journals.


Teaching and training

* Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels


CPD

* Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
* Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio


Management and Administration

* Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management


Clinical governance and audit

* Experience in performing clinical audit
* Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project


Personal attributes

* Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values
* Good oral and written communication skills
