Role Overview
An Assistant Quantity Surveyor (AQS) and Estimator works under the supervision of a Senior Quantity Surveyor or Commercial Manager. The position involves assisting in cost planning, preparing bills of quantities, Measuring drawings, evaluating tenders, and monitoring project expenses throughout the construction lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
* Preparing cost estimates based on drawings, specifications, and scope of work
* Taking off quantities from architectural and engineering drawings
* Preparing Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and cost breakdown structures
* Assisting in tender preparation and submission
* Analyzing subcontractor quotations and negotiating prices
* Monitoring project costs and preparing cost reports
* Valuing work done on-site for interim payments
* Assisting in contract administration and documentation
* Supporting variation claims and change order assessments
* Maintaining cost databases and pricing records
Estimating Duties
As an Estimator, responsibilities typically include:
* Reviewing tender documents and specifications
* Conducting site visits to assess project conditions
* Preparing detailed material, labor, and equipment cost analyses
* Requesting and comparing supplier and subcontractor quotations
* Preparing tender summaries and recommendations
* Identifying project risks and cost implications
Required Skills and Competencies
* Strong numerical and analytical skills
* Proficiency in construction drawings and specifications
* Knowledge of construction methods and materials
* Familiarity with measurement standards (e.g., SMM, NRM)
* Good negotiation and communication skills
* Proficiency in software such as:
* Microsoft Excel
* CostX
* PlanSwift
* Bluebeam
* AutoCAD
* Primavera or MS Project (advantageous)
Educational Requirements
* Ideally but not necessary bachelor's degree or Diploma in:
* Quantity Surveying
* Construction Management
* Civil Engineering
* Professional certification (e.g., RICS, CIOB, or equivalent) is advantageous but typically pursued after experience.
