Role Overview
The Ocean Operator will be responsible for coordinating and managing ocean freight shipments from origin to destination, ensuring smooth and timely execution. The successful candidate will also handle or assist with import/export customs clearance procedures and ensure full compliance with relevant regulations.
Key Responsibilities
* Coordinate import and/or export ocean freight shipments, including full container load (FCL) and less-than-container load (LCL).
* Manage end-to-end shipment processes: booking, documentation, tracking, invoicing, and customer updates.
* Liaise with shipping lines, co-loaders, overseas agents, and other third-party providers.
* Prepare and check Bills of Lading, shipping instructions, and relevant documents.
* Submit and manage customs declarations (CHIEF/CDS) and ensure full compliance with HMRC and other government regulations.
* Work with customs brokers and in-house systems to process clearances in a timely manner.
* Resolve any operational or documentation issues promptly and professionally.
* Ensure all shipment data is accurately entered and maintained in internal systems.
* Provide excellent customer service by maintaining regular communication with clients and proactively managing expectations.
* Keep up to date with industry regulations, including BREXIT-related changes and new customs procedures.
Requirements
* 1+ years of experience in ocean freight operations within a freight forwarding environment.
* Proven knowledge and experience in UK customs procedures (import/export), including customs clearance systems such as CHIEF/CDS.
* Familiarity with incoterms, shipping documentation, and international trade compliance.
* Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
* Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office and freight forwarding software (e.g., Cargowise, ASM Sequoia, or similar).
* Team-oriented with a proactive, can-do attitude.
Desirable Qualifications
* Knowledge of bonded warehouse procedures and inventory linking.
* Experience with port systems (e.g., Destin8, CNS).
* Understanding of supply chain and logistics best practices.
* Relevant logistics/customs qualifications (e.g., BIFA training, CILT, or FIATA certification).
