Offer description

At American Express, our culture is built on a 175-year history of innovation, shared and Leadership Behaviors, and an unwavering commitment to back our customers, communities, and colleagues. As part of Team Amex, you’ll experience this powerful backing with comprehensive support for your holistic well-being and many opportunities to learn new skills, develop as a leader, and grow your career. Here, your voice and ideas matter, your work makes an impact, and together, you will help us define the future of American Express.

The Colleague Services (CS) and Colleague Product Management (CPM) organization, part of the Colleague Experience Group (CEG) — also known as Human Resources — plays a pivotal role in delivering best-in-class services, capabilities, products, and tools that power an exceptional colleague experience at American Express.

This organization designs, builds, and continuously evolves the products and services that enable both the CEG and the wider enterprise to operate effectively and efficiently. Within CPM, the Systems Management team oversees the end-to-end ecosystem of CEG products, capabilities, processes, platforms, and applications — including partnerships with third parties — while ensuring strong adherence to colleague-related risk, compliance, and governance standards.

The Colleague Business Architecture team provides the structured insight needed to understand how CEG delivers value across its processes, systems, and colleague experiences. The team maintains a clear, cohesive view of CEG’s business capabilities, enabling leaders to understand how work is performed today and where opportunities exist to strengthen or evolve our operating model, colleague facing capabilities and strategy execution.

How will you make an impact in this role?

As an Associate, Business Architecture, the successful candidate will support the Manager in activities that help create clarity around how CEG’s processes, systems, and capabilities operate today and how they should evolve to meet strategic priorities. This includes contributing to the documentation and analysis that underpin our understanding of business capabilities, supporting assessments of capability maturity and alignment to strategic objectives, and helping translate these insights into inputs that inform product roadmaps and investment decisions. Through this work, the Associate will play an important role in ensuring CEG’s solutions are designed and developed as part of a cohesive, end-to-end ecosystem.

The Associate will operate as part of a globally dispersed team, in a hybrid role reporting into the Manager, Business Architecture.

Key Responsibilities

1. Support the analysis and documentation of business processes, system interactions, and colleague journeys to create a clear understanding of current operations.
2. Contribute to the development of solution designs by translating business needs into structured documentation that guides product and technology teams.
3. Maintain accurate and up-to-date process, system, and capability documentation to ensure alignment across teams and support ongoing decision-making.
4. Assist with risk, compliance, and governance activities by preparing materials and ensuring documentation aligns with required standards.
5. Help build visibility into the HR technology ecosystem by gathering data, preparing reports, and supporting assessments of system performance and dependencies.
6. Coordinate and support workshops and working sessions, capturing requirements, decisions, and actions to enable effective follow-through.
7. Support change implementation efforts, including requirement traceability, user acceptance activities, and preparation of communication or training materials.
8. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by leveraging data, colleague feedback, and process insights to identify opportunities for simplification and enhancement.
9. Ensure deliverables align with enterprise priorities, established design guidelines, and risk expectations.
10. Develop knowledge of digital product lifecycle practices and business architecture methodologies, with coaching from the Manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

11. Ability to analyze problems, identify patterns, and document processes or workflows in a clear and structured manner.
12. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
13. Comfort working with data to develop insights, summaries, or recommendations.
14. High level of attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and accountability for producing accurate and timely deliverables.
15. Demonstrated curiosity about how systems, tools, and processes work together to support colleague and operational outcomes.
16. Familiarity with HR or enterprise systems is beneficial but not required; an interest in developing deeper technical and architectural understanding is essential.
17. Awareness of risk, control, and compliance concepts, or willingness to learn how they apply to digital product environments.
18. Ability to work in an iterative or agile delivery setting.
