The Vacancy

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Actuarial Public team as an Actuarial Technician Apprentice, which will give you the chance to develop your skills whilst completing the .

This is a permanent role within our firm – but we expect that it will take you approximately 27 months to complete this qualification. Once completed, we expect there will be further opportunities to grow and develop your career across out team

What will your role look like?
In this role, you will support our Public Sector team in delivering high-quality work to our clients, including administering authorities of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and participating employers.

This is a development-focused role where you will build your technical skills and understanding of actuarial work while working alongside experienced colleagues. You will gain hands-on experience across key areas such as pensions calculations, data analysis and reporting.

Alongside your role, you will complete the Level 4 Actuarial Technician qualification with BPP. This will give you structured learning, recognised qualifications and the opportunity to apply your knowledge in practice.

Though this is a varied role, you will be supported to build your skills and confidence over time by:

1. Learning about the different systems and software we use, while supporting the preparation of actuarial calculations for LGPS funding valuations and accounting work, using specialist software
2. Developing your understanding of the work we do and how our processes operate, and sharing your ideas on how we can continue to improve these
3. Working with data - including checking for accuracy, helping to prepare it for analysis, and supporting colleagues to run actuarial models and understand and communicate the outputs from these
4. Supporting senior colleagues with the preparation of reports, client deliverables and delivering an exceptional client service
5. Building your confidence in checking your own work, with guidance and feedback from your team.
6. Maintaining clear and well-organised records of your work to support good practice and meet internal standards
7. Working with a designated in-house mentor to reflect on your progress, and to support your development alongside your apprenticeship studies
8. Following our firm’s policies and standards, including those relating to information security and data protection.

You’ll develop most of the necessary skills during your apprenticeship, however if you enjoy and/or have experience of the following, we think you’ll love this opportunity:

9. Enthusiastic about kick-starting your actuarial career within Public Sector Consulting
10. Educated to at least secondary school level, having achieved 3 SQA Highers (or equivalent), including Higher Maths at grade B (or be expecting to achieve these grades within this year’s results)
11. A proactive, self-motivating approach - using your initiative to get tasks done and manage your time effectively
12. Working quickly and accurately, while paying good attention to detail
13. A strong communicator and team player, who is excited to collaborate with colleagues from across the different areas of our firm
14. Keen to support us in delivery of exceptional client service
15. A drive to learn and share knowledge with a focus on continuous learning and improvement
16. Excellent organisational and communication skills, with the capacity to manage multiple and sometimes competing demands.
17. Excited about the opportunity to develop your skills as part of this role, while gaining hands on experience in a fast-paced financial services organisation.
18. Working in a way that is aligned to our four core values of being friendly, partnering, straightforward and confident.
19. A good level of IT skills (in particular the use of MS Office based software like MS Excel and Outlook), or the enthusiasm to learn more about the use of these in a professional setting

We would also encourage applications from candidates who perhaps do not possess all of the exam requirements listed above, but are competent with the wider skills and experience essential for this role. In cases like this, we will assess individuals' suitability on a case by case basis with our learning provider (BPP).

In addition to a competitive salary and funded qualification, we offer:

20. A flexible selection of employee benefits, so you can choose a package that best matches your lifestyle and needs.
21. A collaborative and supportive work environment where your thinking and ideas are encouraged.
22. A commitment to helping you develop both personally and professionally, with mentoring opportunities and access to our award-winning learning portal, Aspire.
23. Regular social activities, in addition to three days paid volunteering leave each year and a day’s leave to celebrate your birthday.
24. On site mental health and wellbeing support.

We are looking for the successful candidate to be based in our Glasgow office. We offer hybrid working so you can enjoy the positive wellbeing of working from home as well as the benefits of meeting colleagues in our sociable, modern office environments.

We are committed to being open and transparent in our recruitment and reward processes. Please note that this vacancy does not currently meet the minimum salary threshold requirements for Skilled Worker sponsorship within the UK.

To avoid any disappointment, if you require sponsorship, we would encourage you to check whether you may be eligible for a discounted salary threshold, or to explore alternative routes to secure your right to work in the UK before submitting your application. If you meet the criteria outlined in the job description, we’ll be happy to discuss your individual circumstances further with you.

We are continually working to improve our inclusive culture and employ diverse talent. We therefore welcome applications from people from all backgrounds, which includes but isn’t limited to age, disability, ethnic heritage, gender, marital or civil partnership status, neurodiversity, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic background.
