Job overview

The University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) is one of the largest Trusts in the country, and a teaching hospital in collaboration with nearby Keele University. Extensive transformation and development projects have been completed in recent years making this Trust one of the most exciting and innovative places to work. The main site is situated just 5 minutes from Junction 15 of the M6, providing excellent transport links north, south, and east, together with immediate access to the beautiful countryside of Staffordshire, Shropshire and the Peak District.
The Cancer Centre opened its doors in 2009 and offers advanced radiotherapy treatment from its 4 Varian linear accelerators and HDR brachytherapy service. Imaging support is provided by a Siemens CT scanner and the treatment planning is performed using the Eclipse system.
The position would ideally suit a multi-skilled engineer with a background in aspects of electrical, electronic, mechanical and IT.
The advertised post is a lead position within this section and the successful candidate will be expected to continue the drive for change and innovation across the Engineering Service.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be expected:

* To work as part of a team or independently, providing an efficient and effective highly specialist technical support service to the Radiotherapy Department which maximises the availability and reliability of the departmental systems to meet or exceed customer needs and expectations. This will necessitate flexibility in working hours and participation in local “on-call” rotas.
* To be able to lead service developments in area(s) assigned to role, i.e. workshop (electronic and mechanical), linac maintenance, ISO documentation depending on the candidate experience and expertise.
* To take responsibility in the absence of the Chief Engineer in all matters relating to the areas they are leading.
* To participate in preventative maintenance, servicing, complex fault investigation and repair of highly complex therapy and diagnostic radiation equipment at the UHNM radiotherapy department alongside the Varian Medical Systems managed equipment service (MES) contract.
* To carry out routine scheduled quality assurance on radiotherapy equipment.
* Supervise staff within the RPTS demonstrating the initiative, responsibility and autonomy required of a Lead Radiotherapy Engineer.
