Make a Difference. Build Your Skills. Shape the Student Experience. The University of Birmingham is recruiting a team of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Student Ambassadors (EDI SAs) who will take on a dual role as EDI Student Ambassadors and EDI Project Assistants. In this role, you will champion inclusion, lead exciting events, and support various EDI projects across campus. You’ll gain paid, flexible experience in event planning, communications, and project delivery - plus professional mentoring through our GenXchange scheme. This is your chance to develop your skills, grow your network, and help create a more inclusive University community. The team will work to champion diversity, promote equality, and support initiatives that enhance inclusion and student belonging across the University.

Ambassadors will gain valuable experience while making a tangible impact on the student experience.

Role Types

We are looking to appoint four types of EDI Student Ambassadors:

* EDI Student Ambassador – College (CMH ONLY)
* EDI Student Ambassador – Widening Participation x2
* EDI Student Ambassador – Events and Communications

Support your assigned College in developing and delivering student-focused EDI activity, working closely with College EDI teams and student representatives. Provide support for the Birmingham Scholars programme and other widening participation initiatives, helping to ensure students from all backgrounds can thrive. Help develop engaging communications to promote EDI engagement opportunities. Please clearly state which job role you are applying for in your application.

Reporting Structure

You will report to a Student Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer, and work under the guidance of the Head of Student EDI and Assistant Director of Student Affairs (Student EDI). You will collaborate with Professional Services, Colleges, Schools, and student groups across the University.

Main Duties

* Act as a visible and approachable advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion across the University.
* Support the planning, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of EDI projects, events, and campaigns (e.g. Black History Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, Disability History Month).
* Promote and encourage student engagement with EDI initiatives.
* Gather and share student feedback and lived experiences to ensure the student voice is heard in decision-making.
* Feed insights into the Student EDI team’s planning and priorities.
* Participate in team meetings and contribute a student perspective.
* Initiate and lead small-scale EDI projects aligned with institutional priorities, such as the EDI Strategy 2025–2028 and the Birmingham Scholars Programme.
* Represent the student voice in relevant University groups or activities.
* Deliver your role primarily on campus, with some responsibilities undertaken online.

What We Offer

This is a unique opportunity to build your skills, confidence, and leadership capacity while making a meaningful contribution to culture change at the University. As part of the role, you will:

* Paid role via Worklink with flexible hours to fit around studies.
* GenXchange mentoring with a senior University staff member.
* Opportunities to lead on high-profile EDI events and campaigns.
* Networking with University staff, students, and external partners.
* Experience that strengthens your CV and future career prospects.

Person Specification

* Be a reliable, professional, and positive representative of the Student EDI team.
* Able to communicate respectfully and maintain appropriate boundaries with staff and students.
* Attend agreed meetings, training sessions, and events on time and prepared.
* Able to manage your hours and tasks responsibly, keeping the team updated on progress.
* Able to follow University policies, including confidentiality, safeguarding, freedom of speech, and respectful conduct.
* Able to actively contribute ideas, feedback, and lived experience to shape EDI activities.

Application Process

To apply, please complete the online application form, attach your CV and complete the personal statement section outlining your interest in the role, and any relevant experience you have. Interviews with shortlisted applicants will be conducted on w/c 6 October. We will aim to accommodate international students in different time zones wherever possible. For any informal queries, please contact Alex Ferranti (a.ferranti@bham.ac.uk).

We value diversity and inclusion at the University of Birmingham and welcome applications from all sections of the community and are open to discussions around all forms of flexible working. In addition, international students may be required to apply to the Registry for the appropriate Authorised Absence.
