We are seeking a production engineer with a proven background in engineering and manufacturing of machinery and specialist equipment for a global shipping manufacturing business. The role involves supporting daily production activities by implementing and improving manufacturing processes and procedures, focusing on reducing waste, improving quality and safety, and minimizing operating costs. The role requires close collaboration with Engineering to ensure manufacturing best practices and design for manufacture.
In this hands-on role, you will work with multiple departments, addressing live issues on the shop floor, conducting root cause analysis, and implementing solutions. You will be key to process improvements, cost efficiency, and supporting business and production strategy development. The ideal candidate is resilient, assertive, and capable of challenging norms, with strong communication skills to engage both senior management and long-standing staff.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
* Support assembly technicians with real-time build problems and non-conformances.
* Resolve non-conformances using root cause analysis techniques such as 5 Whys and Fishbone Analysis.
* Generate and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
* Conduct time and motion studies using value stream mapping.
* Design jigs and fixtures to improve assembly efficiency.
* Lead continuous improvement initiatives focusing on waste reduction and quality enhancement.
* Apply ergonomics and Health & Safety best practices.
* Introduce error-proofing methodologies.
* Ensure product and BOM requirements are considered from conception to production, fostering a 'design for manufacturing' mindset.
* Undertake special projects and train operators on new processes.
Qualifications and Knowledge
* Minimum HNC / HND or equivalent in mechanical, engineering, or manufacturing discipline.
* Strong understanding of engineering, scientific, and technical information.
* At least 3 years experience in a lean manufacturing environment.
* Proven experience in process improvement.
* Strong problem-solving skills and analytical approach.
* Ability to plan and prioritize autonomously.
* Knowledge of product development, standardization, prototyping, and pre-production processes.
* Understanding of customer expectations and quality impact.
