Proficiency testing (PT) is crucial for laboratory quality assurance, supporting laboratories to achieve and maintain ISO 17025 accreditation. VETQAS, within SD at APHA, is a world-leading veterinary PT provider covering various diseases, species, and tests, supporting APHA and Defra’s core work to safeguard health, welfare, and the economy, and to enhance food security. It develops, produces, and supplies PTs worldwide under the VETQAS brand.

Reporting to a scheme manager, the post holder will perform laboratory duties supporting proficiency testing, working independently and in teams to ensure high standards. Responsibilities include compliance with ISO/IEC 17043 standards, with delegated tasks and responsibilities as per work objectives.


Scientific and Administrative duties

1. Freeze drying biological materials
2. Quality control testing using microbiological techniques
3. Preparing dilutions and dispensing biological materials
4. Coordinating small PT schemes (experienced ASOs)
5. Preparing, labelling, packaging, and distributing PT samples
6. Preparing shipping documentation, including customs proformas
7. Stock management of biological materials
8. Writing and reviewing SOPs
9. Maintaining apparatus and instrumentation
10. Monitoring and ordering consumables and equipment
11. Assisting with project work

* Supervising and training less experienced staff (experienced ASOs)


Safety

* Complying with health, safety, and well-being legislation and procedures


Quality

* Adhering to SOPs and ISO standards


Other Duties

* Performing duties such as Fire Officer or First Aider as agreed with managers
