Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Interventional Fellow in the Department of Cardiology at King’s College Hospital. This post is designed for a Specialty Trainee in Cardiology (ideally ST6 or 7 level or equivalent) who intends to specialise in coronary intervention. The successful candidate will be trained in all aspects of coronary intervention in a high volume centre, and will gain experience with advanced imaging and adjunctive techniques. Applicants must therefore be fully competent in diagnostic coronary angiography and would ideally be some way in to their interventional training.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct studies in coronary intervention with allocated research time within the timetable. Full educational support will be given to present data at national/international meetings and prepare papers for peer-reviewed journals.

The successful applicant will be expected to work with the senior nursing staff and the database manager to co-ordinate research studies and data acquisition.

Main duties of the job

This post would be suitable for a trainee who has successfully completed at least two years of higher specialist training in Cardiology. Previous experience of invasive cardiology is essential – ie. independence as a solo operator in diagnostic cardiac catheterization. Some interventional experience would be advantageous but not essential. Trainees will have completed their MRCP and will have an up to date certification for Adult Life Support training.

Although these appointments are not accredited for training the appointees will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the each department and the hospital. Appointees will have a named educational supervisor. Annual leave and study leave is commensurate with other post foundation doctors. The experience and opportunities offered would be excellent experience for applicants planning a career in medicine.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Interventional fellow will be involved in coronary intervention and will be trained in PCI during the tenure of the post. He/she will undertake PCI lists with consultants and gain experience in complex PCI and adjunctive technology. The appointee will be expected to contribute to PCI-based research. This will involve data collection, provision of information to patients, acquisition of informed consent and assisting during research study cases. In this capacity, the fellow will become familiar with data acquired with IVUS, virtual histology, OCT, pressure wire and quantitative coronary angiography.

The fellow will also be expected to undertake his/her own projects in interventional cardiology during the tenure of the post and there is a comprehensive database and computer/library facilities to assist in this regard. There will be protected research time in the weekly schedule.

Much of the week will be spent in the catheter lab and the fellow will also undertake high volume invasive diagnostic work. The successful candidate will do one outpatient clinic per week. The post is ideally suited to a trainee who is fully competent in diagnostic angiography and is in the early phase of training in PCI. He/she will participate in the frequent national training days that are held in the department. The department also holds frequent ‘Live Case’ days for a variety of meetings.

There is no on‑call commitment with this post, although this may be arranged by mutual agreement.
