DIY Theatre Company is looking for a new Communications Specialist

DIY is a member-led Learning Disability Theatre Company based in Salford. In 2024 we celebrated 30 years of creating accessible, thought-provoking theatre and creative projects.
Our vision is for a world where performers and arts leaders with learning disabilities are valued as part of the rich diversity of our cultural sector and society.
Background to the role
DIY Theatre Company is seeking a dynamic Communications Specialist who will support DIY and its members to make their voices heard and to share our work across digital, social and printed media.
Responsible to: Business Director
Contract: Part Time, Freelance
Based at: The Angel Centre, 1, St. Philips Place, Salford M3 6FA
Fixed Term: 1 Year from October 2025
Probationary Period: 3 months
Fees: £200 per day for 60 days – 2 days per week equivalent (excluding company holidays)
Total fee: £12,000 (responsible for own tax and NI)
Key Responsibilities
Maintaining DIY’s strong visual identity:
Ensuring DIY’s visual identity is consistent across all digital and printed assets and outputs.
Keeping up to date with activities and developments:
Attending monthly Comms meetings
Attending supervision / planning meetings with DIY’s Business Director
Attending termly Workers’ Meetings
Producing the termly Newsletter:
3 per year using Mailchimp platform
Working with Creative Director to develop copy
Editing & reworking text as required for format
Choosing and processing suitable images
Crediting relevant funders for all work included
Developing social media assets to drive engagement
Maintaining DIY’s Website:
Publishing monthly Latest News articles
Working with Creative Director to develop copy
Editing & reworking text as required for format
Choosing and processing suitable images
Crediting relevant funders for all work included
Developing Social Media assets to drive engagement
Publishing termly updates to activity webpages
Updating with new content as necessary
Maintaining other website sections as required
Maintaining overview of site structure
Ensuring all in-page links are current and functional
Archiving:
Updating and maintaining appropriate photographic and video evidence of all areas of DIY’s work, both historical and current, using online cloud storage services (e.g. Flickr, Vimeo)
Saving and cataloguing files accessibly and efficiently
Ensure the DIY archive is updated on a regular basis
At agreed intervals, backing up files to hard drives.
Social Media:
Enhance DIY’s profile across active platforms
Work with the DIY team to develop and post content
Highlight content from Latest News, Newsletters, Website etc. on a regular basis
Ensure consistent messaging in line with DIY’s ethos
Management and oversight of content schedule
Whole Organisation Responsibilities:
To comply with all policies and procedures including Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Confidentiality and Data Protection
To contribute to the development and implementation of the overall ethos, work and aims of the organisation
To participate in supervision, staff meetings, training and other learning activities as required
To recognise your own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to advise and support others.
Person Specification: Essential
We are looking for someone who:
– Has excellent IT skills (including Microsoft Office 365)
– Is experienced creating content for social media
– Is confident using WordPress
– Is accurate and organised
– Has strong written, verbal and presentation skills
– Is able to think independently
– Is proactive in bringing their own creative ideas
– Is willing to learn about and engage with a range of different communication styles
– Is able to plan and prioritise, and work to deadlines
– Has previous experience in an arts communications role
Person Specification: Desirable
– Experience developing communications strategy
– Contacts in press and media
