Project Manager – Onsite Health & Safety and Quality & Compliance
We are looking for a motivated and passionate professional to join as a Project Manager focusing on onsite Health & Safety and Quality & Compliance in the SSGs Defence Nuclear Organisation support team. The main office is at AWE Aldermaston. The role may be based at AWE Aldermaston or Shrivenham Defence Academy and will predominantly work on UK Government sites throughout the Reading region. The SSG DNO Project Manager will provide a customer interface and represent SSG at high‑level external meetings, delivering projects for SSG customers in the UK and occasionally overseas.
Responsibilities
* Manage and deliver key Security Projects for the SSG DNO/AWE team.
* Plan projects and resources, including sub‑contractors, quotes and equipment supply.
* Serve as Document Writer/Technical Author: write and produce Project (H&S) documents, MS Project & P6 Primavera schedules, technical specifications, drawings and use AutoCAD (ACAD).
* Engage in complex discussions and negotiations with SSG Project Managers, clients, external stakeholders, Site Technical Authority and Client Security Managers for key project and maintenance accounts, covering all aspects of H&S, regulatory and licensing requirements.
* Lead (Line‑manage) SSG Skill Zone security technicians and sub‑contractors to deliver projects and maintenance contracts on time, to quality and to cost.
* Provide full financial management: estimating, job costing, invoicing, budget management and prepare clear, detailed financial breakdown reports for the SSG Regional Team Leader.
* Interpret and develop SSG Operations and external client requirements, supporting the team to deliver functional solutions.
* Conduct regular audits of ongoing projects to identify potential H&S improvements or compliance gaps and recommend actions.
* Manage and support delivery of overseas projects and maintenance, including detached duty for meetings, progress updates and support for installation and commissioning activities.
* Apply knowledge of British, European and Government Standards relating to security, QA and H&S policies.
* Carry out all job‑related administration accurately and in a timely manner.
* Ensure compliance with all regulations, standards, and guidelines for electronic security systems, including nuclear licensing requirements.
* Conduct thorough site assessments to evaluate compliance with H&S regulations and implement corrective actions.
* Demonstrate IT skills with familiarity in the Microsoft 0365 Office packages (SharePoint, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
* Perform primary on‑call duties.
* Serve as Subject Matter Expert for all aspects of Electronic Security.
* Present toolbox talks and provide bespoke system training.
Qualifications and Experience
* Full UK Driving Licence.
* Recognised engineering background, apprenticeship or engineering qualifications – e.g., Intruder Detection Systems, Perimeter Intruder Detection Systems, Video Surveillance Systems, Access Control Systems or a recognised project management certification.
* Experience of health & safety, especially on construction sites.
* Membership of the Engineering Council.
* Membership of the Security Institute.
* HNC in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (or equivalent).
* NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Electronic Security Systems (IDS, VSS, etc.) or equivalent.
* ONC/OND in Electronic Security Systems (IDS, VSS, etc.) or equivalent.
* Recognised qualification in Project Management.
* Experience commissioning large complex systems.
* Experience in Electronic Security Installation – Practitioner Level.
* Experience in Physical Security Installation – Awareness Level.
* Leadership, communicating and influencing, managing a quality service, delivering at pace.
* IT skills: Microsoft 0365 Office Suite – SharePoint, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
