Overview
We are looking for a Registered Nurse (new to practice) to join our established and friendly nursing team at Glastonbury Surgery. This is an ideal role for a qualified nurse who hasn\'t worked in general practice and is looking to grow and expand their nursing skills in a structured and supportive clinical environment. The role offers a 37 hour working week with a flexible pattern (Monday - Friday) which will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate. The role provides the opportunity to work across a diverse clinical portfolio and deliver high quality care in a modern environment. An interest or qualification in chronic disease management is desirable, or willingness to undertake appropriate training. The role will be employed through a West Mendip Primary Care Network contract and involve working full time at Glastonbury Surgery. West Mendip Primary Care Network (PCN) is a PCN in the Mendip area of Somerset with five GP practices and a diverse population. Glastonbury Surgery has a registered list size of 14,000 patients cared for by a multi-disciplinary team including GPs, GP Registrars, Paramedic, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, HCAs, Pharmacy Technicians, and admin staff. Responsibilities
General Practice Nurse (new to practice)
BASE: Glastonbury Surgery
HOURS: 37 hours
SALARY: £31,736.63 per annum (pro rata)
Accountable to: GPs, Lead Nurse, and Practice Manager
Job Summary: The post holder will provide care directly to patients with referral to GPs as necessary.
Main Responsibilities
* Wound Management: Perform wound care using aseptic techniques; undertake uncomplicated dressings (including leg ulcers); suture and clip removal
* Screening: opportunistic BP checks, height, weight, BMI, urinalysis, smoking status; venepuncture; INR monitoring
* Health Promotion: healthy eating advice; smoking cessation advice; activity/exercise guidance; alcohol-use advice; complete referrals as appropriate
* Vaccinations and Immunisations: administer injections under individualised prescriptions or PGDs; ensure safe storage and disposal of vaccines; provide adult and childhood immunisation services; develop and work to PGDs for POMs
* Ear Care: ear syringing (with appropriate training) and safe ear care advice
* Infection Control: support infection control measures; apply local and national guidelines; manage laboratory specimens, waste, decontamination, sharps, and spillages
* Emergency Management: competent in anaphylaxis and resuscitation
* Child Health Protection: recognise signs of abuse; documentation and referral procedures; knowledge of local procedures and agencies; legal considerations
* Men\'s Health: provide advice on relevant topics; testicular self-exam; continence and prostatic disease; sexual health; opportunistic consultations and referrals
* Family Planning: contraception advice and referrals; emergency contraception support; health checks for hormonal contraception
* Women\'s Health: screening programmes, cervical sampling under supervision, breast self-awareness, STD prevention and referrals, swabbing for microscopy, lifestyle advice, incontinence management
* Travel Health Advice: comprehensive pre-travel advice including vaccinations, medications, malaria prophylaxis, bite avoidance, safe sex, food hygiene, sun protection, emergency meds, health insurance
* Chronic Disease Management: participate in nurse-led chronic disease clinics (Diabetes, Heart Failure, Asthma & COPD) and support clinic management
* Personal and Professional Development: assist in clinical audit, mentor staff, work in a team, maintain professional standards, support the team, participate in evidence-based practice and clinical supervision
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential: Registered General Nurse; registered with the NMC with no restrictions and re-validation in line with NMC requirements
Desirable: willing to undergo training; post-registration chronic disease training in Diabetes, Heart Failure, Asthma & COPD
Experience
Essential: Working at Tier 2 level Registered Nurse per the Primary Care and General Practice Nursing Career and Core Capabilities Framework; not having held a post in the West Mendip PCN within 12 months
Desirable: practice nursing chronic disease management in Primary Care
Knowledge & Skills
Essential: good interpersonal and teamwork; quality care; empathetic; clear communication; time management; confidentiality and data security; sound judgement; ability to work under pressure
Desirable: IT skills (Microsoft Office); experience with EMIS Web
