Job overview
We are seeking skilled and compassionate individuals to join the new NHS Children and Young People’s Gender Service (London) in the role of Consultant Psychiatrist in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Post holders will provide consultant psychiatrist leadership and expertise for the NHS Children and Young People’s Gender Service, as part of the multidisciplinary team.
Successful candidates will be responsible for ensuring the highest levels of safety and quality in the service. They will have been involved in service improvement and design and be able to work objectively in a service with high level of external scrutiny, whilst focusing on delivering the best care for children and young people, aligned to the new service specification.
The post holder will provide clinical leadership, supervision and support to junior staff and be a source of clinical expertise to the multi- disciplinary team. The post offers opportunities to take a key role in a number of exciting service development and research initiatives.
In line with recommendations from the ongoing Cass Review, we are recruiting to part time sessions, in order for staff to maintain a broad clinical perspective by working across related services within other secondary and tertiary centres. It is expected that staff members will therefore work across at least one other clinical specialism area, in addition to this role within the gender service.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities
* Have accountability for the delivery of high quality and safe care, with the Clinical Director and Clinical Lead for the Children and Young People’s Gender Service (London).
* Ensure that high standards and appropriate protocols are in place and rigorously followed for all aspects of the service.
* Undertake detailed and complex assessments aligned to a pre-agreed approach but using a high degree of clinical expertise.
* Support the development of care plans including using clinical judgement regarding priority of support, expected timelines etc.
* Liaise with other health professionals and social care teams as necessary to support appropriate care for patients.

* Approved training and experience in relevant therapeutic practice (e.g. psychoeducation, parenting groups, CBT or Family Therapy) AND/OR previous consultant experience
* Evidence of leadership experience
* Evidence of service development experience, such as setting up a new service and service evaluation
* Application of evidence based practice and interest in clinical and policy developments for this care group
* Development of multidisciplinary teamwork, close collaboration with a wide variety of services including paediatrics and social care
Skills/Abilities
* Therapeutic skills relevant to the management of children and young people with complex presentation

* Knowledge, understanding and experience of the development/training programmes for staff of all disciplines (e.g, nurse, GPs).
* A higher teaching degree (e.g, lecturer, senior lecturer, reader)
* Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching.
* Higher training or qualification in postgraduate clinical education
Academic Achievements
* Approved training and experience in research and quality improvement project understanding and experience
* Demonstrable academic achievements to support continued allocation of Research time in job plan
* A proven track record, in child and adolescent psychiatry research (e.g., lead research team, research supervisor, oral communications)
* A higher research degree (e.g. MPhil., MD or PhD)
