Head of Tax North West Europe – London
About the role
To provide a comprehensive tax service for Exolum North West Europe including:
* Tax compliance: to oversee and ensure timely and accurate filing of corporate tax, VAT and employment tax submissions;
* Tax reporting and forecasting: management and review of corporate tax accounting and forecasting for group and statutory financial reporting;
* Tax planning and optimisation: maintaining a tax strategy and advising on tax planning and optimisation.
Key responsibilities
Operations:
* To lead, manage and develop the Tax Accountant, enhancing their skills and developing them professionally;
* Maintain the tax strategy for Exolum N W Europe, and publish the strategy annually to conform with UK legislative requirements;
* Maintain the tax sections of the Corporate Risk Register, including monitoring the ongoing management of tax related risks.
* Take the lead as the key technical advisor to other departments and areas of the business, on tax impact of any policies, procedures or new initiatives.
Tax Compliance:
* To review and oversee the timely and accurate filing of corporate tax computations and returns across Exolum N W Europe, with the main focus being on the UK computations;
* To manage and review the accuracy of the analysis and preparation of UK capital allowances claims on over £40m of capital expenditure p.a., being a core component of the UK corporate tax returns;
* To ensure that appropriate transfer pricing requirements are met, maintained and documented in respect of intra-group management services and loan arrangements;
* To review and oversee the timely and accurate filing of quarterly UK VAT returns;
* To review and oversee the analysis and submission of data to HMRC relating to taxable benefits accounted for via annual UK PAYE settlement agreements;
* In support of the Senior Accounting Officer, to review and ensure the ongoing operation and implementations of SAO policy and documentation requirements across UK Taxes, including performance of validation checks, monitoring and documentation of risks, and provision of conclusions to the SAO ahead of the preparation and submission of annual certification to HMRC;
* Management of the relationship with external tax advisors.
Tax Accounting, Reporting and Forecasting:
* Oversee corporate tax accounting across Exolum N W Europe, including current and deferred tax reporting and tax-related disclosures for group and local statutory financial reporting;
* To review and/or provide tax inputs to corporate financial forecasts and plans, in particular relating to the interaction of current tax and deferred tax asset recognition with corporate financing and dividend strategy;
Tax Planning and Optimisation:
* Actively monitor developments in relevant tax legislation and rules in N W Europe and their implications for Exolum N W Europe;
* Provide pro-active and effective tax support and advice to the business to identify and resolve tax issues, and to optimise tax planning;
* Work with external consultants and in-house legal, finance, HR and corporate treasury personnel to ensure that any changes in the corporate structure are implemented efficiently and effectively from a tax perspective.
About You
The successful candidate will have:
* A degree-level qualification.
* Professional accounting qualifications (ACA/ACCA/ACMA).
* 10+ years of relevant post-qualification UK tax experience.
* Experience in a medium to large multinational company and multi-currency reporting environment, especially with extensive fixed assets.
* Solid experience in tax reporting and deferred tax calculations within a multinational group.
* Experience in preparing and/or reviewing capital allowances claims or analysis, and using Alphatax.
* Detailed knowledge of UK tax, including corporate tax, capital gains, VAT, employment taxes, and stamp duty land tax.
* Detailed knowledge of UK capital allowances legislation.
* Detailed knowledge of IFRS and FRS102 accounting rules, particularly those affecting tax reporting and deferred tax.
Skills required:
* Very strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues simply and clearly.
* Very strong organizational skills, including the ability to set and meet tight deadlines, delegate effectively, and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Very good interpersonal and team-working skills.
* Good Excel spreadsheet skills.
* High degree of initiative, proactive, self-starter.
* Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
* Flexibility and adaptability to change.
* Willingness to be “hands-on” where necessary.
Responsibilities:
* Managing the “business as usual” compliance and tax reporting workloads.
* Responding to ad-hoc requests for advice or information.
* Undertaking project work when required.
Desirable qualifications and experience:
* Tax Qualification (CTA/ATII).
* Knowledge of Germany tax.
* Knowledge and experience of corporate finance within a multinational group.
* Experience using SAP.
