Radiology Assistant

Closing date: 26 April 2026.

This post will provide you with the opportunity to support a wide range of disciplines within the Radiology department, including MRI, CT, Ultrasound, ED, and outpatient/inpatient imaging departments. For suitable candidates, we encourage role extension with a career progression pathway through to Radiographer. This role involves working during weekends, Bank Holidays, and out‑of‑hours shifts. Enthusiasm, flexibility and the ability to work without direct supervision, coupled with a willingness to learn, are essential.


Key Duties


Communication

Provide and receive routine information requiring discretion, sensitivity or persuasive skills. Exchange factual information with patients and other healthcare professionals using persuasion, reassurance, discretion, sensitivity and empathy as required. Assess communication needs of patients, anticipate where communication difficulties might make completion of the examination difficult, and overcome barriers. Implement alternative methods of communication if required. Provide any required after‑care and communicate any delays in a timely manner. Be able to relate to all manner of patients with understanding and care, respecting their privacy and dignity, and provide a caring and confidential service.


Clinical

Develop and maintain good knowledge of Radiology examinations and procedures, including preparation, execution and any required aftercare to ensure safe delivery of service. Contribute to the smooth running of the various departments on a daily basis as required. Undertake basic observations for patients as required (e.g., oxygen saturations and blood pressure). Deliver effective care and treatments through improving clinical and technical knowledge and expertise. Liaise with other healthcare professionals to arrange timely patient transport. Assist in patient care, including changing patients, explaining dressing requirements, and assisting patients in and out of the scan table or room. Manage inquiries from both internal and external sources, including patients and hospital staff. Use the departmental Radiology Information System confidently and competently. Assist with moving and handling of patients requiring assistance in a manner that is safe and follows the Trust manual‑handling policy. Reassure patients requiring additional support and attend to personal hygiene requirements when necessary, understanding the role of a chaperone. When working in MRI, be sensitive to patient anxiety regarding the claustrophobic nature of the MRI scanner and help patients overcome this anxiety so the examination can be performed. Monitor stock, operate stock control, and order medical equipment, accessories, consumables and linen as required via the appropriate pathway.


Education

Participate in the development and promotion of a positive learning environment that meets the needs of all learners within the department. Participate in personal development reviews and work to achieve personal objectives and competencies. Use reflection of experience to enhance personal development and support students and other Imaging Assistants through mentorship and local induction. Assist qualified staff in evaluating resources to develop high standards of patient care and achieve value‑for‑money initiatives. Undertake responsibilities that may be identified by service leads or in the appraisal process in an agreed timeframe.


Infection Prevention & Control

Ensure compliance with all Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures, understanding your role in preventing infection in patients and staff. Wear personal protective equipment when required. Care for, check and maintain high standards of cleanliness of clinical equipment to minimise spread of infection. Ensure appropriate infection control measures are utilised, paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment, waste and linens contaminated by bodily fluids. Manage high standards of cleanliness in examination rooms and record compliance in line with departmental requirements. Remove patient cannulas after the procedure in line with Trust policy. Ensure safe and appropriate handling of IV and oral contrast.


Governance

Report any incidents on the Trust risk management system and participate in any necessary incident investigations. Maintain awareness of your responsibilities, supporting policies and the required level of training for your role. Ensure all equipment is maintained to a high standard and used appropriately. Conduct basic fault‑finding, reporting and documenting faults as per Trust requirements. Maintain professional boundaries and working relationships with patients and colleagues. Be aware and compliant with safeguarding principles for adults and children, and know how to respond to suspected abuse. Keep accurate and timely records of your work and that of other members of the radiology team. Participate in audit projects, either of your own work, the department, or others, as required. Be responsible for your own mandatory training and ensure it is up to date as per Trust requirements. Attend departmental meetings, read meeting minutes and monthly governance updates. Be aware of and comply with all standards of conduct and care related to the Trust and Radiology Department in particular. Advocate for safeguarding patients; demonstrate courage to speak up when concerns about care arise. Demonstrate commitment to improving care and the patient experience by participating in Quality Improvement programmes. Deliver a high standard of care in accordance with all policies and procedures.


Finance, Information and Resources

Adhere to and ensure the effective use of resources. Maintain appropriate stock levels and order additional supplies as required.


Health and Safety

Maintain knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure appropriate measures for health and safety for patients, relatives, visitors, hospital staff and contractors. Work safely and responsibly at all times, ensuring your practices comply with Trust and Directorate policies on Health and Safety, Infection Prevention and Control, COSHH, Security and Radiation Protection, and report any hazards to the Radiographer in Charge. Read, understand and sign local safety procedures, e.g., Radiation safety policy, IRMER procedures. Ensure all apparatus and equipment you are competent to use are functioning satisfactorily, reporting any malfunction in line with local requirements. Work in accordance with all Trust and Clinical Imaging policies. Recognise emergency situations, initiate basic life support and summon the crash team when necessary. Be responsible for the health, safety and welfare matters affecting yourself, patients, visitors, professional and non‑professional authorised staff within the Diagnostic Imaging Department or the Trust. Assist patients in completing any safety forms required as part of their examination and evaluate the information provided to determine if the examination is safe to proceed, escalating if necessary.


Working Conditions

Frequent use of VDU equipment. Occasional exposure to distressing or emotional situations (e.g., badly injured patients, cardiac arrest). Occasional exposure to body fluids (e.g., blood, urine) and infection risks, as well as to intoxicated, aggressive or abusive patients and relatives.


Other Duties

Ensure awareness of and adherence to all Trust and Radiology‑related policies. Assist in promoting the overall aims of the department. Participate in departmental organisation and workload planning, offering proposals to change department procedures. Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job, participate in training activities, and encourage and support staff development and training. Respect confidentiality of all matters related to employment and staff.


Qualifications

* Basic education: GCSE/O Level, with at least grade C or above in Maths or English.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
* Experience in a clinical hospital setting.
* Experience working with and/or dealing with people.
* NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care.
* Experience within an Imaging Department.
