The charity
The Dedham Vale Society (DVS) was created in 1938 with the charitable object to maintain, protect and, if possible, enhance the natural and architectural beauties and amenities of the area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) known as “Dedham Vale” which covers both banks of the River Stour in Suffolk & Essex; and also to stimulate public consciousness of these ends. DVS is a charity (no 246007) currently with seven trustees which include a chairman and a treasurer. The latter is seeking to retire after 14 years in office.
Governance
The current trustees have created a new charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) (no 1201027) with a view to transferring the business of the current charity to the CIO. This has not yet been completed because, among other reasons, the trustees have been very busy dealing with a challenge to the government in relation to a car park development at the Manningtree railway station (which has now been notably successful).
Trustees meet 4-6 times per year as required by the level of activity prompting the need for action. There are generally two fund raising events each year (for which the treasurer is not responsible): one in the winter, with a lecture on a topic of local interest, and the other a summer party. These events raise around £2,000.
Job description
The treasurer is required to issue and pay invoices, to maintain the books of account and to prepare the annual accounts for approval by the trustees and members at the AGM. In addition, the treasurer is responsible for filing gift aid claims with HMRC. The treasurer is not responsible for membership, which is done by the Membership Secretary.
The treasurer is closely involved with policy issues, as one of the senior trustees.
