Hepatology Support Nurse
An exciting opportunity for a Band 5 Registered Nurse to join our supportive Gastroenterology Department as a Hepatology Support Nurse. You will develop specialist skills alongside a Clinical Nurse Specialist team, delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care within our Tertiary Hepatobiliary Service.
Ideal for a nurse seeking to broaden their experience in a specialist field, you will work within a multidisciplinary team supporting patients with complex liver conditions and will be involved in nurse‑led services such as paracentesis, haemochromatosis management, FibroScan and long‑term condition monitoring.
You will be responsible for coordinating and supporting patients on elective hepatobiliary and planned care pathways, acting as a key point of contact for patients and families throughout their care journey and supporting the team with delegated clinical and administrative duties.
Responsibilities
* Support the CNS teams in delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care to hepatology patients within the Tertiary Hepatobiliary Service.
* Assist in the coordination and management of the elective paracentesis service, including pre‑procedure preparation, patient liaison, and clinical management of patients undergoing paracentesis.
* Support the care and monitoring of patients with haemochromatosis, including database maintenance, referral organisation, and patient guidance.
* Contribute to the delivery and audit of the FibroScan service, performing procedures as appropriate and arranging follow‑up care.
* Assist in maintaining and updating patient databases and surveillance programmes for viral hepatitis (HBV/HCV), parenchymal liver disease, and HCC.
* Act as a point of contact for liver patients, offering advice and support via the liver nurse advice line.
* Participate in service audit and quality‑assurance initiatives.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse, current NMC registration.
* Diploma in Nursing.
Experience
* Post‑registration experience and successful completion of band 5 foundation gateway competencies.
* Experience within a relevant clinical setting (acute hospital settings encouraged).
* Evidence of maintaining a clinical learning environment.
* Evidence of working with students.
* Recent acute hospital experience, including as a student nurse.
Knowledge
* Knowledge of current nursing issues and clinical governance.
* Awareness of own limitations.
Skills
* Ability to organise workload and delegate tasks appropriately.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Ability to support less experienced staff.
* Problem‑solving skills.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Basic IT skills, including e‑mail and word processing.
