What you'll be doing
The Global Managing Director has a pivotal leadership role for the Classic Art Cluster at Christie’s (Decorative Art, Antiquities, Russian Art, Books, Travel, Science & Natural History, Carpets, & Islamic Art). The GMD works with key stakeholders to drive global management, business strategy, growth, profitability and financial performance of the Cluster.
The role also works closely with senior roles across the company to drive Christie’s overall strategy.
What your day might look like
Strategy
•Work with key stakeholders to develop the global strategic plans for the Cluster in line with overall corporate objectives.
•Develop market expertise about departments within the Classic Art Cluster in order to devise accurate and innovative strategic responses.
•Partner with departments to devise tactical sales execution plans across all sales channels (auction, online and private) in line with the Cluster’s global strategic planning.
•Track effectiveness of strategic and sales plans and revise planning where necessary to continue alignment with overall corporate goals and achieve profitability targets.
Financial & Commercial Management
•Achieve global profitability targets by increasing revenues across all sales channels through implementation of agreed business plans.
•Manage the Group budget and P & L to ensure financial and headcount targets are met.
•Oversee, manage and, when required, lead, the negotiation of the major commercial transactions conducted by the Group, controlling financial concessions and maximizing recoveries, and ensuring that all financial deals have been rigorously and properly vetted.
•Work with senior HR, Finance and Legal partners to manage the market complexities within the Cluster.
•Work with President EMEA & senior Client Strategy team to ensure the top clients for the Cluster are being engaged for both the short, medium & long term.
Leadership & Management
•Take a senior leadership position for the Cluster, ensuring best practice and Christie’s values are adopted from the top.
•Work with Heads of Department to build a strong, supported and motivated team of employees who exemplify Christie’s core values, including teamwork and respect.
•Work with key stakeholders to manage the overall organization of the Cluster, ensuring it is structured to allow for efficient and effective decision-making and communication and that it has the resources in place to fully exploit new market/revenue opportunities.
•Ensure all staff have clear objectives, targets and development plans and that there are strong retention plans around all key talent.
•Effectively resolve any personnel issues, partnering with the HR Business Partnership where required, to ensure the Group maintains a spirit of collaboration and teamwork.
•Develop strong internal relationships across all regions and departments to ensure effective collaboration among colleagues across the Company.
What you'll bring to the team
•Master’s Degree in Business Management or equivalent field preferred; or an undergraduate degree with the relevant and related work experience and business knowledge .
•Solid business management skills with strong business acumen.
•Experience of multiple sales channels; retail, online, auction and private sales
•Commercially minded with strong financial experience. Possess track record in P & L management and driving tangible results.
•Strategic with an entrepreneurial mind-set with experience of either running a business or a significant division of large business
•Technologically minded and proven experience using technological advancement to enhance business performance
•Highly collaborative
•Ability to influence and operate successfully within a matrix environment
•Excellent people management skills in a global environment with the ability to inspire creativity, establish a vision and motivate a team to achieve strategic goals
•Capacity to manage multi-cultural teams
•Languages an advantage
•Travel at an estimated 30% of time
•Able to develop tools and techniques to monitor and manage business performance
•Knowledge of Art markets within Clusters.
•Actively engage on key Christie’s strategic initiatives e.g. Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, CSR
